Teachers Promotion: Thousands of teachers working in council schools across the state may finally see a long-pending promotion process move forward. After promotions remained pending since 2016, the Basic Education Council has directed all Basic Education Officers (BSAs) to prepare district-wise seniority lists.

The move could benefit around 70,000 teachers out of approximately 3.30 lakh teachers working in the state’s council schools.

Promotion Process to Begin After Seniority Lists

According to the promotion process, teachers working in primary schools may be promoted to headmaster positions, while eligible teachers may also move to assistant teacher posts in upper primary schools. Similarly, existing headmasters and assistant teachers in council schools can be considered for promotion to headmaster positions in upper primary schools.

The long delay in promotions has been a major concern among teachers, with the previous promotion process reportedly pending since 2016.

Basic Education Council Secretary Surendra Tiwari has instructed BSAs to prepare the required seniority lists within their respective districts. The lists will form the basis for taking the promotion process forward.

Deadline Set for October 23

The authorities have been given three weeks to complete the preparation of the seniority lists. The lists are required to be submitted to the council office by October 23.

Once this stage is completed, the promotion process is expected to begin in November.

The requirement for filling posts is also linked to provisions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which prescribes the required ratio of headmasters to students in council and upper primary schools.

With around 70,000 teachers expected to benefit, the exercise could address a significant number of vacant or eligible promotional positions across the state.

Teachers Welcome Long-Pending Promotion Move

Teacher representatives have highlighted that promotions have been a long-standing demand among employees working in council schools.

Shiv Shankar Singh, state president of the National Educational Federation, and Brijesh Srivastava, the organisation’s state media in-charge, said teachers had been waiting for promotions for a prolonged period.

The preparation of seniority lists is now expected to provide a formal start to the process, with promotions likely to move ahead after the lists are submitted and the required procedures are completed.
