US-Bangladesh Relations: The United States has encouraged Bangladesh to become part of the US-led Pax Silica initiative, a strategic programme focused on critical minerals, semiconductors, clean energy and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The proposal came during high-level talks in Dhaka aimed at expanding bilateral trade, investment and regional cooperation.
US Envoy Meets Bangladesh Prime Minister
US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka, where both leaders discussed ways to deepen economic ties and strengthen collaboration across several strategic sectors.
According to local media reports, Gor highlighted Bangladesh’s growing potential as a reliable partner in the global economic security framework and invited the country to join the Pax Silica initiative. The programme, spearheaded by the US State Department, seeks to build resilient supply chains for critical technologies while reducing dependence on China in key industries such as semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and AI.
Pax Silica Could Open New Opportunities for Bangladesh
The proposed partnership is expected to create opportunities for Bangladesh in sectors including critical minerals, renewable energy, semiconductor manufacturing and digital infrastructure.
Officials indicated that Bangladesh’s participation could strengthen its position in emerging global supply chains while attracting fresh foreign investment in technology-driven industries.
Sergio Gor Highlights Expanding Economic Partnership
Following the meeting, Sergio Gor shared his views on X, saying the United States sees significant opportunities to enhance economic cooperation with Bangladesh.
He emphasised that expanding the partnership between the two countries remains a priority for Washington and expressed confidence that closer collaboration could deliver meaningful results for both sides.
US Signals Growing Confidence in Bangladesh
During the discussions, Gor reportedly praised the country’s improving stability under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership. He also noted that the United States had updated its travel advisory for Bangladesh, describing it as an encouraging signal for American businesses and investors looking to explore opportunities in the country.
The revised advisory is expected to boost investor confidence and support future commercial engagement.
Bangladesh Invites More US Investment
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged American companies to increase investments in Bangladesh, particularly in agriculture and information technology.
He encouraged US businesses to invest in warehousing, soybean processing, cotton, wheat and other agricultural sectors to strengthen supply chains and improve food security. Rahman also highlighted Bangladesh’s ambition to attract greater investment in the country’s rapidly expanding IT industry.
According to officials, US investors are considering organising an investment summit in Bangladesh to explore new business opportunities.
Rohingya Crisis Also Discussed
Apart from trade and investment, the leaders also reviewed the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis.
Gor commended Bangladesh for continuing to provide shelter and humanitarian assistance to displaced people from Myanmar. Prime Minister Rahman thanked the United States for contributing more than half of the international aid provided to Rohingya refugees.
The US envoy stressed that the crisis requires a long-term political solution and called for coordinated efforts involving ASEAN members, neighbouring countries and the wider international community.
Senior Officials Present During Talks
The meeting was attended by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen and other senior officials from both governments.
Overall, the discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation, attracting new investments, strengthening regional partnerships and exploring Bangladesh’s possible participation in the Pax Silica initiative, while also reaffirming both countries’ commitment to addressing regional humanitarian challenges.
