Sugar Price Update: Sugar consumers are getting some relief in September as prices have declined across several major cities. Wholesale sugar rates have dropped significantly since the beginning of the month, with Delhi and Kanpur recording the sharpest fall of Rs 850 per quintal.
According to data cited from ChiniMandi, sugar prices have declined in both wholesale and retail markets between September 1 and September 11. The reduction has been particularly noticeable in Delhi, Kanpur, Raipur, Chennai and other major markets.
Sugar Prices Fall in Delhi and Kanpur
Delhi recorded one of the biggest declines in wholesale sugar prices during this period. On September 1, the wholesale rate stood at Rs 5,800 per quintal, but by September 11, it had dropped to Rs 4,950 per quintal.
This represents a reduction of Rs 850 per quintal, or Rs 8.50 per kg, over 10 days.
Kanpur witnessed an identical decline. The wholesale price fell from Rs 5,850 per quintal to Rs 5,000 per quintal, resulting in a reduction of Rs 850 per quintal.
Other cities also recorded noticeable price cuts.

Among these markets, Delhi and Kanpur saw the largest wholesale price reduction, while Mumbai recorded the smallest decline.
Retail Sugar Prices Also Come Down
The fall in wholesale rates has also been reflected in retail sugar prices in several cities.
In Delhi, sugar was selling at around Rs 61 per kg on September 1. By September 11, the retail price had fallen to Rs 53 per kg, providing consumers with a reduction of Rs 8 per kg.
Kanpur also witnessed a significant decline, with the retail rate falling from Rs 62 to Rs 53 per kg.
Meanwhile, prices in other cities changed as follows:
- Raipur: Rs 62 to Rs 55 per kg
- Mumbai: Rs 61 to Rs 54 per kg
- Ranchi: Rs 61 to Rs 55 per kg
- Chennai: Rs 63 to Rs 58 per kg
These figures indicate that consumers in several markets have received noticeable relief compared with the beginning of September.
Why Are Sugar Prices Falling?
The decline in sugar prices is linked to the government’s efforts to maintain adequate supplies in the market, particularly ahead of the upcoming festive season.
Authorities are focusing not only on keeping prices under control but also on preventing any artificial shortage. Sugar mills have been directed to maintain sufficient stocks and ensure that sugar reaches the market at reasonable prices.
The government has also introduced a fortnightly sales quota system for sugar mills from September. The measure is intended to regulate the release of sugar into the market, discourage artificial shortages and maintain a steady supply.
Sugar Price Outlook Ahead of the Festive Season
With demand for essential commodities generally increasing during the festive period, maintaining adequate sugar supplies is an important priority for the government.
The recent decline in wholesale and retail rates is therefore a positive development for consumers. However, actual retail prices can vary depending on the city, local market conditions and the retailer.
