SIR 2026: The Election Commission of India has announced a series of measures to make the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls easier for voters who have received notices over unmapped records or logical discrepancies.
Under the new arrangement, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit the homes of such electors to collect the required documents and upload them on the ECINet platform for consideration by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). The Commission said these voters will generally not have to appear personally before the ERO or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer.
BLOs to Collect Documents From Voters’ Homes
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Election Commission in New Delhi on September 26, attended by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
According to the Commission, hearings will be required only in exceptional cases and should preferably be conducted online. If an in-person or online hearing is considered necessary, an elector can authorise an adult family member to appear on their behalf. The Commission has also said that facilities for online hearings will be strengthened.
The EC has also directed District Election Officers to establish adequate help desks and organise special camps for people living in night shelters, labourers, poor and homeless communities and other groups who may require assistance with the enrolment process.
SIR Completed in 20 States and UTs
The Election Commission said the SIR exercise has already been completed in 20 states and Union Territories, including Bihar and West Bengal. It reiterated that the June 24, 2025 order for conducting the revision across states and UTs was approved unanimously by the Commission.
The poll panel also said that people whose names were left out during the revision and who want to be included can approach the concerned Electoral Registration Officer. Chief Electoral Officers, District Election Officers and EROs have been instructed to launch special enrolment drives for such electors.
The Commission has also said that the final elector count will become clear after the remaining phases of the revision are completed.
Delhi SIR Claims Deadline Extended to October 30
Following a request from the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, the Election Commission has extended the deadline for filing claims and objections under the SIR process until October 30, 2026.
The deadline for disposal of notices, claims and objections has also been extended to November 30, 2026.
The Commission also clarified that a letter sent to the Cabinet Secretary was not related to any policy matter concerning the Election Commission or its IT division. According to the poll panel, the communication concerned the work of an officer serving the Commission on deputation.
