Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on September 20, 2026, offering some stability for motorists despite recent movements in the global crude oil market.

Brent crude has slipped below the $104-per-barrel level, while the rupee-dollar exchange rate remains an important factor for India’s fuel market because the country depends heavily on imported crude.

As of September 20, petrol is priced at ₹111.21 per litre in Mumbai, while diesel costs ₹97.83 per litre. Delhi continues to have lower rates among the major metros, with petrol at ₹102.12 and diesel at ₹95.20 per litre.

Bengaluru₹110.82₹98.77
Hyderabad₹116.15₹104.23

Hyderabad has the highest petrol and diesel prices among the cities listed, at ₹116.15 and ₹104.23 per litre, respectively. Kolkata’s diesel rate is ₹99.82 per litre, while Chennai’s stands at ₹99.55. Bengaluru motorists are paying ₹110.82 for petrol and ₹98.77 for diesel.

Why Have Fuel Prices Remained Stable?

The recent decline in international crude prices has helped keep domestic fuel rates relatively steady. Brent crude fell below $104 per barrel after ending the previous week lower, although global oil markets remain sensitive to supply developments.

The rupee’s movement against the US dollar is another important factor. Since crude oil is traded internationally in dollars, a weaker rupee can increase the cost of imported crude and put pressure on domestic fuel prices.

For consumers, the current stability means there has been no major change at fuel stations across the major cities. However, petrol and diesel rates can vary significantly from one location to another because of differences in taxes, transportation expenses and local market conditions.

Why Petrol and Diesel Prices Differ Across Cities

Fuel prices are not uniform across India because the final retail price includes several components. Central excise duty and state-level taxes, including VAT, contribute significantly to the amount motorists pay.

Transportation and distribution costs can also affect the final price, particularly when fuel has to travel longer distances from refineries or storage facilities. Local demand and supply conditions can add to these differences.

India follows a dynamic fuel-pricing system, under which retail petrol and diesel prices can be revised based on market conditions. Petrol prices are updated daily at 6 am under this system.

For motorists, checking the local rate before refuelling remains important because the price in one city can differ considerably from another, even when international crude prices remain unchanged.
