New Delhi: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across several parts of India on Tuesday, September 15. Fuel rates vary from state to state due to differences in VAT, local taxes, freight charges and other components included in the retail price.
In Chennai, petrol is being sold at around Rs 107.77 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 99.55 per litre. However, consumers in other states are paying different prices for petrol and diesel.

Why Are Petrol and Diesel Prices Different in Each State?
Fuel prices differ across India mainly because states impose different taxes on petrol and diesel. Transportation and freight costs can also affect the final retail price.
As a result, two neighbouring states can have noticeably different fuel prices even when they receive fuel from similar sources.

In Chennai, fuel rates have remained stable over the past few days. Petrol is priced at Rs 107.77 per litre, while diesel is available at Rs 99.55 per litre.
The petrol price remained at Rs 107.77 per litre from September 10 to September 15, while diesel continued to be priced at Rs 99.55 per litre during the same period.
When Were Fuel Prices Last Increased?
Fuel prices witnessed a series of increases in May. On May 15, petrol and diesel prices were raised by Rs 3 per litre. This was followed by another 90-paise increase on May 19.
On May 23, petrol became costlier by 87 paise per litre, while diesel prices increased by 91 paise. On May 25, petrol prices were raised by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre.
The cumulative increase since May 15 was nearly Rs 7.5 per litre.
What Determines the Retail Fuel Price?
The price paid by consumers includes several components, including the base price of fuel, central and state taxes, dealer commissions and transportation-related costs.
Since state-level taxes are different, petrol and diesel prices can vary significantly across the country.
