Petrol Diesel Price Today, September 24, 2026: Global crude oil prices remain elevated, with Brent crude still trading above the $100-per-barrel mark. Despite the pressure from higher international oil prices, petrol and diesel rates in major Indian cities remained unchanged on Thursday.
Government sources have indicated that there is no immediate proposal to increase petrol and diesel prices. Authorities are closely monitoring developments in the global oil market and the situation around the Strait of Hormuz.
The rise in crude prices has nevertheless put pressure on state-owned oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL). According to an ICRA assessment reported on September 24, the companies are facing significant losses because domestic retail fuel prices have not moved in line with the increase in crude costs.
Crude Oil Prices Remain Above $100
International crude prices eased slightly on September 24 but remained elevated. Brent crude was trading at around $102.12 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was around $91.30 per barrel during the reported morning market update.
The Indian crude basket has also risen sharply. According to an ICRA assessment, its cost reached $117.40 per barrel on September 21, 2026, compared with an average of around $66 per barrel during the 2025-26 financial year.
The increase in crude costs has been linked to continuing uncertainty surrounding oil supplies and geopolitical developments in West Asia. The situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains an important factor for global oil markets.
Will Petrol and Diesel Prices Increase?
For now, government sources have said that there is no immediate petrol or diesel price hike proposal despite the volatility in crude oil prices. The government is monitoring the international market and focusing on energy security and stable fuel supplies.
Domestic fuel prices have remained unchanged in major cities even as crude prices have moved sharply higher. The government had earlier maintained stable retail prices during the West Asia crisis, while temporary measures were also introduced to ensure adequate fuel availability. Those temporary restrictions were withdrawn from July 1 after the supply situation improved.
The pressure, however, is being felt by public-sector oil marketing companies. ICRA estimates that IOC, BPCL and HPCL are currently losing around ₹8 per litre on petrol and ₹9 per litre on diesel, with their combined daily fuel-marketing losses estimated at roughly ₹530 crore.
Petrol and Diesel Rates Today

| City | Petrol | Diesel |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | ₹102.12/litre | ₹95.20/litre |

| Lucknow | ₹101.86/litre | ₹95.36/litre |
| Patna | ₹113.35/litre | ₹99.36/litre |
The final price paid by consumers differs from one state and city to another because of local taxes and other components included in retail fuel pricing. The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) also publishes official retail-selling-price information for petrol and diesel.
For now, motorists continue to get relief from stable retail fuel rates despite the sharp increase in the cost of crude oil. However, any sustained change in international crude prices could continue to put pressure on the fuel-pricing situation.
