Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, despite continued movement in international crude oil prices. Brent crude slipped below the $100-per-barrel level amid geopolitical developments, but the change in global oil prices has not resulted in an immediate revision in domestic fuel rates.
Fuel prices in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru remained broadly stable. Rates in other major cities such as Hyderabad and Gurugram also showed little movement.
Petrol and Diesel Prices Today, September 22
In Delhi, petrol is selling at Rs 102.12 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 95.20 per litre.
Mumbai continues to have higher fuel prices, with petrol at Rs 111.18 per litre and diesel at Rs 97.83 per litre. In Kolkata, petrol costs Rs 113.50 per litre, while diesel is available at Rs 99.82 per litre.
In Bengaluru, petrol is priced at Rs 110.93 per litre and diesel costs Rs 98.80 per litre.
Crude Oil Prices Slip Below $100
International crude oil prices remained under pressure amid geopolitical developments. Brent crude fell below the $100-per-barrel mark after US President Donald Trump said he was open to talks with Iran at the United Nations.
Brent crude had settled at $100.34 per barrel on Monday after declining 3.4%. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also dropped 4.5% to settle at $95.78 per barrel.
However, changes in international crude prices are not automatically reflected in Indian petrol and diesel prices on the same day.
Why Petrol and Diesel Prices Differ Across Cities
Retail fuel prices in India are determined by several components. These include international crude oil prices, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, refining expenses, taxes and dealer margins.
State-level VAT is another major reason fuel prices vary between cities. Petrol and diesel are currently outside the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system, meaning their prices continue to be affected by state-level taxation.
The Centre also reduced export levies on petrol and diesel with effect from September 16. The export levy on petrol was lowered to Rs 0.50 per litre, while the levy on diesel was reduced to Rs 20 per litre. These changes apply to fuel exports and do not directly change prices at domestic petrol pumps.
