Getting a passport is not limited to international travel. It is also an important identity document that establishes a person’s identity outside India and is accepted as proof of identity and address for various purposes.
If you are planning to apply for a new passport, renew an existing one or use the Tatkaal service, it is important to know about the latest changes. The Ministry of External Affairs has introduced the Passport (Amendment) Rules, 2026, bringing changes to passport fees and certain provisions related to applications and validity.
The revised rules affect adult applicants as well as children below the age of 15. The Tatkaal service has also become more expensive, with the fee for a 60-page Tatkaal passport now reaching ₹6,000.
Standard Passport Fees Increased
The government has revised the charges for standard passports with both 36-page and 60-page booklets.
For an adult applicant, the fee for a 36-page standard passport has increased from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. This represents a ₹1,000 increase over the earlier charge.
Similarly, the cost of a 60-page standard passport has gone up from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500, making it ₹1,000 more expensive than before.
These revised charges apply to applicants seeking the respective standard passport services under the new rules.
Tatkaal Passport Fees Revised
Applicants who need their passport through the expedited Tatkaal service will also have to pay higher charges.
The fee for a 36-page Tatkaal passport has increased from ₹3,500 to ₹5,000, representing a ₹1,500 rise.
For a 60-page Tatkaal passport, the charge has gone up from ₹4,000 to ₹6,000. This means applicants opting for the larger booklet under the expedited service will now have to pay ₹2,000 more than the previous fee.
The cost is even higher when a 60-page passport is being reissued through the Tatkaal route. The revised charge is ₹8,500, compared with ₹5,500 earlier.
Passport Fees for Children and Concession
The revised rules also change the passport charges applicable to children below 15 years of age.
A standard 36-page passport for a child will now cost ₹1,750, while the Tatkaal fee for the same 36-page passport will be ₹3,000.
There is also a concession for certain applicants. Children below eight years of age and senior citizens above 60 years will receive a 10% discount on new passport applications.
With these changes, applicants should check the applicable fee and service category before submitting their passport application, particularly if they require Tatkaal processing or are applying on behalf of a child.
