New Maruti Wagon R Facelift: The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been one of the most recognisable hatchbacks on Indian roads for years. Its tall-boy styling, roomy interior and easy-to-drive character have helped it remain a preferred choice for many families and first-time car buyers.
Maruti Suzuki is now working on an updated version of the popular hatchback. A heavily camouflaged test vehicle of the new Wagon R has recently been spotted on Indian roads, indicating that the company is preparing to introduce an updated model.
Although the overall tall-boy profile appears to have been retained, the upcoming Wagon R is expected to receive changes to its exterior design, powertrain, features and safety equipment.
New Maruti Wagon R Design
The test vehicle was covered extensively in camouflage, making it difficult to identify all the exterior changes. However, the familiar tall and upright silhouette of the Wagon R remains clearly visible.
The upcoming model is expected to continue with the practical body shape associated with the current Wagon R. Its tall roofline, vertical rear lamps and compact proportions are likely to remain key elements of the design.
While the camouflage hides several details, reports indicate that Maruti Suzuki could make revisions to the front grille and bumper. Based on the changes spotted so far, the upcoming model appears more likely to be a facelift or substantial update rather than a completely new-generation Wagon R.
New Z-Series Engine Could Be the Biggest Change
One of the most important updates expected on the new Wagon R is its engine. Maruti Suzuki has been progressively introducing its newer Z-Series petrol engines while moving away from some of its older K-Series powertrains.
The updated Baleno provides an example of this strategy. It uses a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine that produces 82 PS of maximum power and 112.4 Nm of peak torque.
In the Baleno, this engine is offered with a 5-speed manual transmission as well as an AMT gearbox.
If the same engine family is introduced in the Wagon R, it could bring a significant powertrain update to the hatchback while retaining the practicality expected from the model.
New Wagon R CNG Version Expected
The Wagon R is also expected to continue with a CNG-powered version, considering the strong demand for fuel-efficient vehicles in India.
The existing Wagon R 1.0 S-CNG has a claimed mileage of 34.05 km/kg. Therefore, simply replacing the existing engine with a newer unit may not automatically result in a major improvement in CNG efficiency.
However, a Z12E-based CNG powertrain could provide Maruti with an opportunity to introduce updated engine technology while potentially improving emissions and overall powertrain performance.
Maruti has already claimed a fuel-efficiency figure of 33.61 km/kg for the Baleno CNG using the same basic engine architecture.
Features Expected in the New Wagon R
Along with the exterior and engine changes, Maruti Suzuki could also upgrade the Wagon R’s feature list.
The current Wagon R is equipped with features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, steering-mounted controls, six airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors, depending on the variant.
The latest spy images, however, do not reveal exactly which additional features will be introduced with the facelift.
Maruti could make some minor changes to the cabin as part of the update, potentially giving the interior a fresher appearance and improving the overall equipment list.
Safety Could Get More Attention
Safety is another area where the updated Wagon R could receive improvements. The current model already offers several safety features, including six airbags and ABS with EBD on applicable variants.
Given the increasing focus on vehicle safety in the Indian market, the facelift could potentially receive additional safety equipment or improvements, although the exact specifications have not yet been confirmed.

The upcoming Wagon R appears set to retain the qualities that have made the hatchback popular while introducing modern updates underneath and around the familiar design.
The expected Z-Series petrol engine, continued CNG option, revised styling, updated features and possible safety enhancements could make the refreshed Wagon R more competitive in India’s small-car segment.
However, Maruti Suzuki has not yet officially confirmed the complete specifications, features or launch details of the updated Wagon R. More information is expected as testing progresses and the launch gets closer.
