Taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited have received additional time to complete their income tax compliance for Assessment Year 2026-27. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended both the tax audit report deadline and the ITR filing deadline for the specified category of taxpayers.

The deadline for filing the income tax return, which was earlier October 31, 2026, has now been extended to November 21, 2026. At the same time, the deadline for furnishing the tax audit report has been moved from September 30 to October 21, 2026.

Two Different Deadlines for Two Compliance Requirements

The revised dates apply specifically to taxpayers covered under the audit-related category mentioned in the Income Tax Act. The two deadlines relate to separate stages of the tax filing process.

The tax audit report must now be furnished by October 21, 2026. After the audit process, the eligible taxpayer will have until November 21, 2026, to submit the applicable ITR.

This means the extension does not apply to every person filing an income tax return for AY 2026-27. Taxpayers who are not covered by the specified audit category need to follow the deadline applicable to their respective return type.

What Should Taxpayers Do Now?

The additional time gives eligible taxpayers and their chartered accountants more time to complete the audit, reconcile financial records and prepare the return.

Taxpayers whose accounts are subject to audit should provide the required financial records and supporting documents to their CA or tax professional at the earliest. It is also important to check account books, GST records, bank statements and TDS details for any discrepancies before the return is filed.

The Income Tax Department’s official portal continues to provide the ITR forms and filing-related information for AY 2026-27.

Revised ITR and Tax Audit Deadlines

For eligible audit cases, the tax audit report deadline has been extended to October 21, 2026, while the corresponding ITR filing deadline is now November 21, 2026. The CBDT said a formal order or notification giving effect to the extension would be issued separately.

Taxpayers should check whether they fall under the specified audit category before relying on the revised dates.
