Gold price: Gold delivered a powerful rally in the international market during August 2026, climbing nearly 13% and closing the month at around $4,563 per ounce. According to the latest World Gold Council (WGC) report, it was the precious metal’s third-strongest monthly performance in the past 25 years.

The sharp rise has once again increased investor interest in gold. But after such a strong monthly rally, the key question for investors is: Will gold continue its upward journey in September, or could prices become more volatile?

The WGC has highlighted several factors that influenced gold’s August performance and could continue to shape the market in the weeks ahead.

Why Did Gold Prices Rise So Sharply in August?

The World Gold Council’s September 9 Gold Market Commentary, based on its Gold Return Attribution Model (GRAM), identified multiple factors behind August’s impressive rally.

One of the biggest contributors was strong investment demand through gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Increasing ETF inflows indicated growing interest from investors looking to gain exposure to the precious metal.

Market momentum also played an important role. As gold prices continued moving higher, positive sentiment encouraged further buying.

Another major factor was the weaker US dollar. Changes in foreign-exchange conditions and opportunity costs helped create a more supportive environment for gold during the month.

Gold ETF Inflows Remain a Major Support

Gold ETFs witnessed substantial inflows across different regions in August, highlighting strong international investor demand.

According to the WGC:

  • European gold ETFs: Around $7.9 billion in inflows
  • North American gold ETFs: Around $7.8 billion
  • Asian gold ETFs: Around $2 billion

Europe recorded the highest inflows among the major regions, closely followed by North America.

The WGC also reported that net managed-money positioning on COMEX increased by approximately $13 billion during August. This reflects stronger participation from financial-market investors as gold’s rally gathered pace.

Gold Market Volatility Is Also Increasing

While investor demand strengthened, the gold market also showed signs that traders were preparing for larger price swings.

The WGC noted an increase in implied gold volatility, suggesting that market participants expect greater movement in gold prices.

Another notable development was strong demand for call options, indicating that some investors were positioning for the possibility of further gains.

Together, strong ETF buying, rising market momentum and increased options activity helped reinforce the bullish trend in August.

What Could Happen to Gold Prices in September?

After gold’s dramatic rise in August, investors are now closely watching the factors that could determine its next direction.

Some of the most important influences include:

  • US inflation data
  • Federal Reserve interest-rate decisions
  • Movement in the US dollar
  • Global economic conditions
  • Crude oil prices
  • Geopolitical developments
  • Investor demand for gold

The US Federal Reserve’s September meeting is expected to be particularly important for financial markets.

Fed Rate Decision Could Influence Gold

Expectations surrounding US interest rates have shifted as investors assess a combination of stronger and weaker economic data.

Comments from Federal Reserve officials and discussions surrounding the recent Jackson Hole symposium have also influenced expectations about the future path of interest rates.

Gold does not generate interest income, so changes in interest-rate expectations can have a significant impact on investor demand. A shift towards lower rates can potentially make gold more attractive, while expectations of higher rates may put pressure on the precious metal.

Geopolitical Tensions Remain Important

Geopolitical uncertainty continues to be another factor supporting market interest in gold.

Investors are particularly watching ongoing US-Iran tensions, which could influence risk sentiment, crude oil prices and inflation expectations.

Any significant escalation in geopolitical tensions could increase demand for traditional safe-haven assets such as gold. On the other hand, easing tensions could reduce some of that support.

Gold Prices Fall on September 11

Despite the strong August rally, gold prices experienced some pressure in international markets on Friday, September 11.

On COMEX, gold was trading at around $4,369.40 per ounce, down $37.90, or 0.86%, from the previous close. During the session, the contract moved between a high of $4,380.70 and a low of $4,351.30 per ounce.

The decline came as crude oil prices jumped sharply and uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook weighed on precious metals.

In India, however, October gold futures on the MCX were trading higher during morning deals. The contract gained around 0.75% to ₹1,53,721 per 10 grams.

Gold prices can change throughout the trading session, so the market may see further movement depending on global developments.

Crude Oil and Rupee Movement Matter for Gold in India

For Indian investors, international gold prices are only one part of the equation. Crude oil prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate can also influence domestic gold prices.

Brent crude remained above $100 a barrel amid US-Iran tensions, raising concerns about additional inflationary pressure.

At the same time, the Indian rupee weakened to around ₹95.30 against the US dollar. Since India imports most of its gold, a weaker rupee can increase the domestic cost of imported gold.

This means Indian gold prices could remain sensitive not only to international bullion prices but also to currency movements and developments in the global oil market.

Gold Price Outlook: What Should Investors Watch?

The near-term outlook for gold remains uncertain after its exceptional August performance. The metal could continue to attract demand if investors remain concerned about inflation, interest rates, currency weakness and geopolitical risks.

At the same time, after a sharp rally, profit-taking and sudden price corrections cannot be ruled out.

For now, investors should closely monitor US inflation figures, Federal Reserve rate expectations, the dollar index, crude oil prices, ETF flows and geopolitical tensions.

With several major market-moving factors in play, gold prices could remain volatile in the near term.
