The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has shared guidance on the revised rules for provident fund advances, explaining how much members can withdraw, how frequently they can apply and the conditions that apply to different types of claims.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the organisation highlighted the importance of understanding withdrawal limits before submitting a claim. Under the rules described in the guidance, eligible members can withdraw up to 75% of their EPF balance, including employee and employer contributions with interest, after completing 12 months of EPF membership.

The revised framework also simplifies partial withdrawals by grouping 13 earlier provisions into three broad categories: essential needs, housing-related requirements and special circumstances.

EPF Advance Withdrawal Rules: Categories and Limits

The withdrawal frequency depends on the purpose for which the advance is requested. Members must specify the reason when submitting their claim.

Withdrawal categoryEligible purposePermitted frequency
Essential needsIllness affecting the member or familyNo limit
Essential needsEducation for the member or familyUp to 10 times during membership
Essential needsMarriage of the member or familyUp to 5 times during membership
HousingPurchase of a house, flat or plotUp to 5 times during membership
HousingConstruction of a houseUp to 5 times during membership
HousingRepayment of a home loanUp to 5 times during membership
HousingRenovation, alteration or improvementUp to 5 times during membership
Special circumstancesSituations notified by the Central Board of EPFUp to 2 times in a financial year

These limits explain how frequently members may apply for advances for different purposes. The amount payable and other eligibility conditions remain subject to the applicable EPFO rules.

Partial PF Withdrawal, Final Settlement and Pension Rules

EPF members can apply for a non-refundable advance while they are still employed. For eligible partial withdrawals, members generally need to submit Form 31.

The special-circumstances provisions also cover unemployment. Under the rules described in the source material, members may withdraw up to 75% of their PF balance immediately after job loss and claim the remaining 25% after two months of unemployment, subject to the applicable conditions.

The rules also extend the waiting period for premature final EPF settlement from two months to 12 months. For final pension withdrawal, the corresponding period has been extended from two months to 36 months.

For final PF settlement, members must submit Form 19. This allows eligible individuals to claim their full provident fund balance, including employee contributions, employer contributions and accumulated interest, subject to the applicable settlement conditions.

Full PF settlement is generally available after retirement or resignation once the member has remained continuously unemployed for at least two months, or 60 days, under the conditions described in the source material.

Pension withdrawal follows separate rules. Members with less than 10 years of eligible continuous service may apply to withdraw their accumulated pension benefit as a lump sum using Form 10C. Those with 10 years or more of eligible service generally need a Scheme Certificate and can receive a monthly pension upon reaching the applicable pension age, ordinarily 58 years. Members approaching retirement may have options involving pension benefits and a Scheme Certificate, depending on their eligibility.

How Long Does an EPFO PF Withdrawal Claim Take?

The time required to process a provident fund claim depends on the submission method and the member’s eligibility.

According to the processing estimates cited in the source material, online claims from members with completed KYC may take around three to seven working days. Eligible claims processed through the auto-settlement facility may be completed within 72 hours, while physical claims submitted at an EPFO office can take up to 20 working days.

In general, successfully submitted claims may be approved and credited to the member’s bank account within seven to 15 working days, although actual processing times can vary.

EPFO members may receive SMS notifications as their claims move through the submission, approval and payment stages. Keeping bank details and KYC information updated can help avoid unnecessary delays.
