Millions of salaried employees may soon get a more convenient way to access their Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) savings. Under the proposed EPFO 3.0 initiative, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is preparing to introduce facilities that could allow members to withdraw eligible PF amounts through ATM cards and UPI.
According to media reports, the new system could benefit more than 30 crore EPFO account holders. It may also speed up the processing of advance withdrawal claims of up to ₹5 lakh for purposes such as weddings and home purchases, with settlements potentially taking just 3 to 4 days.
However, EPFO has not yet issued final official confirmation regarding the launch date and complete details of these proposed facilities.
EPFO 3.0: PF Withdrawal Facility Through UPI
As part of its proposed digital transformation, EPFO is working on an upgraded system known as EPFO 3.0. The organisation has reportedly started testing PF withdrawals through UPI in collaboration with selected banks.
The proposed facility aims to connect members’ provident fund accounts with their banking services, making eligible withdrawals easier and reducing the need for lengthy claim procedures.
If implemented, members may be able to access their eligible PF funds through UPI or a linked ATM/debit card, subject to the rules and limits prescribed by EPFO.
How Will the PF ATM Withdrawal System Work?
Under the proposed arrangement, EPFO members may be able to access eligible provident fund amounts using a linked bank debit card or UPI account.
EPFO 3.0 is expected to operate through a centralised information technology system similar to a Core Banking Solution (CBS). This would allow the system to verify members’ eligibility and process claims automatically in real time.
The proposed integration of the Universal Account Number (UAN) portal with UPI is intended to simplify the withdrawal process. Instead of following the existing claim process and waiting for approval, eligible members could receive their funds much faster.
The aim is to make PF withdrawals possible within minutes for eligible transactions, although the final process and timelines are yet to be officially confirmed.
How Much PF Money Can Members Withdraw?
The proposed ATM withdrawal facility is expected to have a daily withdrawal limit. The amount available to a member will depend on the advance withdrawal eligibility and applicable EPFO rules.
Another important condition mentioned in the proposed changes is that members may have to retain at least 25% of their total PF balance in their accounts.
This requirement is intended to protect employees’ retirement savings by ensuring that a portion of their accumulated provident fund remains untouched.
The exact withdrawal limits, eligibility conditions and implementation details will depend on EPFO’s final guidelines.
When Will EPFO 3.0 Be Launched?
EPFO 3.0 is expected to make provident fund services more convenient by introducing digital withdrawal options and faster claim processing.
The proposed ATM and UPI facilities could reduce paperwork and help employees access eligible PF advances more quickly. However, members should not consider the reported launch date or withdrawal conditions final until EPFO releases an official notification.
Subscribers are advised to follow announcements on the official EPFO website for confirmed information about the launch, withdrawal limits and eligibility requirements.
