Dearness Allowance (DA) has become a key topic for government employees and pensioners as they await the next revision of their allowance. While the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a 5% DA increase for its employees, central government employees are waiting for an official decision on the DA revision effective from July 2026.
Central government DA is revised twice a year, in January and July. In January 2026, the allowance was increased from 58% to 60%. A further increase of 3% or 4% is being discussed for the July revision, but the final percentage has not yet been officially confirmed.
DA Hike 2026: How Much Could Your Salary Increase?
The amount employees receive from a DA revision depends on their basic salary. If the current DA rate of 60% rises to 63%, employees would receive an additional amount equal to 3% of their basic pay. If the rate increases to 64%, the additional amount would equal 4% of basic pay.
Here is how the possible increase would affect two basic salary levels:
| Basic salary | Extra DA at 3% | Extra DA at 4% |
|---|---|---|
| ₹18,000 | ₹540 per month | ₹720 per month |
| ₹35,400 | ₹1,062 per month | ₹1,416 per month |
These figures represent the additional monthly DA compared with the existing 60% rate. The actual benefit will depend on the final percentage announced by the government.
How Is Dearness Allowance Calculated?
For central government employees, DA is calculated under the applicable pay commission framework using the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW). The calculation takes into account the 12-month average of the index, which reflects changes in retail prices and inflation.
The purpose of DA is to help employees manage the impact of rising living costs. The revised rate is determined through the applicable formula and announced by the government.
Until an official notification is issued for the July 2026 revision, central government employees and pensioners should treat the proposed 3% or 4% increase as unconfirmed.
Himachal Pradesh Announces 5% DA Hike
Ahead of Diwali, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced a total 5% increase in Dearness Allowance for state government employees. The announcement was made during an interaction with the media on Friday.
The increase combines a fresh 4% instalment with 1% outstanding DA from the previous period. According to the announcement, the decision is expected to benefit approximately 2.75 lakh state employees and pensioners.
Class IV employees will also receive ₹10,000 in revision arrears. The amount is scheduled to be credited directly to their bank accounts on November 1.
The Himachal Pradesh announcement is separate from the pending central government DA revision. Central government employees will need to wait for an official announcement to know the revised rate applicable to them.
