Central government employees may receive another increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) from January 2027. Based on current calculations, the DA rate could rise from 63% to approximately 67%, providing an additional benefit of 4 percentage points on employees’ basic pay.

This comes after the Union Cabinet approved a 3% DA hike on October 28, 2026. The latest increase, effective from July 1, 2026, raised the Dearness Allowance for central government employees from 60% to 63% of their basic salary.

The October announcement was considered a Diwali gift for government employees. The calculation follows the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission. Importantly, DA is calculated only on basic pay and not on the employee’s total salary.

The formula used to calculate the monthly allowance is:

DA Amount = Basic Pay × DA Rate ÷ 100

DA Hike 2027: How Much Will Employees’ Salaries Increase?

The impact of the latest DA revision depends on an employee’s basic salary and pay level. With the rate increasing from 60% to 63%, employees will receive a higher monthly allowance.

For example, a central government employee at Level 1 with a basic salary of Rs 18,000 previously received Rs 10,800 as DA at the 60% rate. Following the revision to 63%, the monthly DA has increased to Rs 11,340. This means an additional Rs 540 every month.

Similarly, employees at Level 5 with a basic salary of Rs 29,200 were previously receiving Rs 17,520 as DA. At the revised rate of 63%, their allowance will increase to Rs 18,396 per month, providing an additional Rs 876.

The estimated arrears for these Level 5 employees up to October will amount to Rs 3,504.

If the expected 4% increase from January 2027 is approved, employees could receive another improvement in their monthly earnings.

DA Hike News: Four States Also Increase Dearness Allowance

Following the Centre’s DA announcement, several state governments also announced increases in Dearness Allowance for their employees and pensioners by the end of October 2026.

Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have announced revisions to provide additional financial relief to their government employees.

Here is a look at the latest state-wise DA changes:

Rajasthan: The state government has announced a 3% increase in DA. The revised rate will be applicable from July 1, 2026. Employees will also receive arrears for the previous months.

Tamil Nadu: Government employees in Tamil Nadu will also benefit from a 3% DA increase. The revised allowance will be effective from July 1, 2026, along with arrears for the applicable period.

Chhattisgarh: The state government has increased DA by 2 percentage points, taking it from 58% to 60%. The revised rate will come into effect from November 1, 2026.

Madhya Pradesh: Employees in Madhya Pradesh will receive a 2% increase in DA, raising the rate from 58% to 60%. The revised allowance will be paid with the November 2026 salary.

How Is Dearness Allowance Calculated? Check the Formula

Dearness Allowance is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW). The calculation takes into account the average index for the preceding 12 months.

The formula provided for calculating DA is:

[
DA = \left[\frac{(Average\ AICPI\text{-}IW \times 2.88)-261.41}{261.41}\right]\times100
]

Based on an average AICPI-IW figure of 152, the calculation works out as follows:

  • Step 1: 152 × 2.88 = 437.76
  • Step 2: 437.76 − 261.41 = 176.35
  • Step 3: 176.35 ÷ 261.41 = 0.674607
  • Step 4: 0.674607 × 100 = 67.46%

According to this calculation, the DA rate comes to approximately 67.46%, which indicates the possibility of a rate close to 67% in the next revision.

However, the January 2027 DA hike is still an expectation based on the calculation and should not be considered an officially approved increase until the government makes an announcement.
