Government employees and pensioners are watching for updates on Dearness Allowance (DA), with the next revision for central government staff expected to apply from July 2026. Meanwhile, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a 5% DA increase for its employees ahead of Diwali.
Central government DA is revised twice a year, in January and July. In January 2026, the allowance increased from 58% to 60%. A further increase of 3% or 4% is being discussed for the July 2026 revision, but the central government has not yet officially confirmed the new rate.
DA Hike 2026: How Much More Salary Could You Receive?
The additional amount from a DA increase depends on an employee’s basic salary. If the existing DA rate of 60% rises to 63%, the employee would receive an additional amount equal to 3% of basic pay. If it increases to 64%, the additional amount would equal 4% of basic pay.
The estimated monthly increase at two basic salary levels is shown below.
| Basic salary | Extra DA at 3% | Extra DA at 4% |
|---|---|---|
| ₹18,000 | ₹540 | ₹720 |
| ₹35,400 | ₹1,062 | ₹1,416 |
These figures show the additional monthly DA compared with the current 60% rate. The actual increase for central government employees will depend on the rate officially approved by the government.
How Is Dearness Allowance Calculated?
Central government employees’ DA is calculated under the applicable framework of the Seventh Pay Commission. The calculation uses the 12-month average of the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW), which tracks changes in retail prices.
DA is intended to help employees manage the effect of inflation on their household expenses. Changes in the allowance are determined through the prescribed calculation method and announced by the government.
Until an official notification confirms the July 2026 revision, the proposed 3% or 4% increase should be treated as unconfirmed.
Himachal Pradesh Government Announces 5% DA Increase
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced a total 5% DA increase for state government employees during a media interaction on Friday.
The increase combines a fresh 4% instalment with 1% outstanding DA from the previous period. According to the announcement, approximately 2.75 lakh state government employees and pensioners are expected to benefit.
The Chief Minister also announced ₹10,000 in revision arrears for Class IV employees. The amount is scheduled to be transferred directly to their bank accounts on November 1.
The Himachal Pradesh decision applies to the state’s employees and pensioners. It is separate from the pending DA revision for central government staff, who must wait for an official announcement on the July 2026 rate.
