Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu is approaching India’s eastern coastline, bringing the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 120 kmph. With the storm expected to make landfall between Nellore and Narsapur, authorities in vulnerable districts are taking precautionary measures to protect residents.

The approaching cyclone has also raised concerns about school and college operations in several affected regions. Although there is no common statewide holiday order covering all three states, district administrations are considering local closures depending on weather conditions.

Parents, students and teachers have been advised to follow announcements from their respective district administrations before travelling to educational institutions on November 3.

Northern coastal districts such as Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu have experienced adverse weather conditions ahead of the cyclone’s landfall.

Chennai observed a school holiday on November 2. However, decisions regarding educational institutions on November 3 will depend on further announcements from local district authorities as the weather system moves across the region.

Cyclone Murasu Landfall: IMD Issues Weather Update

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coastline between Nellore and Narsapur.

The anticipated landfall window extends from 11:30 PM on November 2 to 4 AM on November 3.

In its evening weather update, the IMD reported that at 8:30 PM, the cyclone was positioned approximately:

  • 60 km east of Kavali
  • 80 km northeast of Nellore
  • 90 km southeast of Ongole
  • 110 km south of Bapatla
  • 160 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam
  • 180 km northeast of Tirupati
  • 210 km north-northeast of Nungambakkam in Chennai

The weather department stated that the storm was expected to continue moving slowly in a north-northwestward direction.

Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected in Andhra Pradesh

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers at several locations across Andhra Pradesh due to Cyclone Murasu.

The approaching weather system is expected to bring difficult conditions, particularly in coastal areas. Strong winds and heavy rainfall could disrupt normal activities and affect transportation and educational services.

The weather department has reiterated its forecast that the cyclone will move slowly towards the north-northwest before crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast during the specified period.

Will Schools Remain Closed on November 3?

School holidays on November 3 will depend on the decisions taken by individual district administrations. While Malkangiri in Odisha has already announced closures, authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are monitoring local weather conditions.

Parents and students should check official district collector announcements and school notifications before leaving home. A holiday declaration in one district does not automatically apply to other districts or the entire state.
