The Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, popularly known as the AMRUT scheme, was launched by the government in 2015. The programme focuses on improving essential urban services and addressing the basic infrastructure needs of people living in cities and towns.

The scheme is being implemented jointly by the central and state governments and is aimed at making urban areas more liveable by improving water supply, sanitation, drainage, transport and green spaces.

What Is the AMRUT Scheme?

AMRUT stands for Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation. It is a government initiative focused on upgrading basic infrastructure and improving the quality of life in urban areas.

The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 with a focus on providing better civic facilities and strengthening essential urban services.

One of its key goals is to ensure that people have access to basic amenities such as reliable water supply, sewerage services and improved public spaces.

Key Objectives of AMRUT

A major focus of the AMRUT scheme is to provide tap water and sewerage connections to households in urban areas. Better water supply and sanitation facilities are intended to improve basic living conditions.

The programme also promotes the development and maintenance of green spaces and open areas, including parks. These initiatives are aimed at creating healthier and more liveable urban environments.

Another important objective is to address urban pollution. The scheme supports public transport and facilities for non-motorised transport, helping cities develop more sustainable mobility options.

AMRUT also uses service-level benchmarks to improve the delivery of urban services and ensure better civic amenities for citizens.

Upgrading Water, Sewerage and Transport Infrastructure

The AMRUT programme covers several areas of urban infrastructure development. Existing water supply networks are being improved, while new systems are being developed to strengthen water distribution.

The scheme also focuses on sewerage infrastructure, including the construction and improvement of sewage treatment plants. These facilities are intended to improve the management and treatment of wastewater.

Stormwater drainage is another important component. Drainage systems are being constructed and upgraded to improve the disposal of rainwater, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and cyclones.

Urban transport is also covered under the programme, with infrastructure being developed for public transportation as well as non-motorised modes of travel.

Cities Covered Under the AMRUT Scheme

The AMRUT scheme covers a wide range of urban areas. These include cities and towns with populations of more than one lakh, state capitals and tourist destinations.

Providing household tap water and sewerage connections is among the key priorities of the programme. The development of parks and other open spaces is also an important part of the mission.

The scheme additionally gives attention to the conservation and revival of water bodies. Improving water security and expanding household water connections are among the areas being addressed.

Women’s self-help groups are also being encouraged to participate in activities related to water demand management, monitoring water quality and operating water-related infrastructure.

Through these measures, the AMRUT scheme aims to strengthen essential urban services while making cities more sustainable and better equipped to meet the basic needs of their residents.
