Aadhaar has become an essential document for accessing several banking, government and financial services in India. It is commonly required for opening bank accounts, applying for passports and completing various government-related procedures. Keeping Aadhaar details accurate and updated is therefore important for avoiding difficulties while accessing essential services and government schemes.

There is good news for Aadhaar cardholders who want to update their registered email address. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is providing free email ID update services through its official Aadhaar mobile app until December 31, 2026.

Previously, users had to pay Rs 75 for this service. According to the announced facility, the fee waiver applies from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026, and is available only for email updates completed through the Aadhaar mobile application.

UIDAI has also clarified the procedures for changing names and correcting personal details. Applications involving name changes will be examined based on supporting documents, including affidavits and Gazette notifications. Here are some important Aadhaar update rules that cardholders should know.

Aadhaar Email ID Update Free Until December 31, 2026

Aadhaar holders who have not registered an email address or want to replace an existing email ID can use the official Aadhaar mobile app.

The facility is intended to help people keep their contact information updated so they can receive important notifications and communications related to Aadhaar.

The important point is that the free service is limited to email ID updates completed through the Aadhaar mobile app. The earlier charge for this service was Rs 75.

How to Update Your Email ID in Aadhaar

Follow these steps to update your registered email address:

  1. Download the official Aadhaar mobile application.
  2. Open the app and log in using the required credentials.
  3. Find and select the email ID update option.
  4. Enter your new email address and the requested details.
  5. Follow the verification instructions to complete the process.

Once the required verification is completed, your email update request will be submitted.

Aadhaar Surname Change Rules After Marriage or Divorce

UIDAI has specified documentation requirements for women who want to change their surnames following marriage or divorce.

Applicants must submit an Annexure D affidavit along with valid identity proof. The affidavit should clearly establish that the surname change is related to marriage or divorce and does not represent a change in the individual’s identity.

There are also separate provisions under the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for updating a person’s name following a gender change. Applicants seeking such changes must provide the required Proof of Identity (PoI).

Aadhaar Name Correction: When Documents Are Not Required

UIDAI has also clarified that certain minor name corrections can be made without submitting additional documents.

One such case involves correcting the improper use of capital and small letters within a person’s name. These are considered formatting-related corrections rather than changes to the individual’s identity.

However, applications involving substantial name changes may require supporting documents. UIDAI examines the submitted records, including affidavits and Gazette notifications, before processing such requests.

Aadhaar holders should therefore check the applicable requirements before submitting an update request to avoid delays or rejection.
