The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadlines for filing tax audit reports and income tax returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2026-27. The move provides additional time to companies and other taxpayers who are required to complete the tax audit process before submitting their returns.
Under the revised schedule, companies can now file their income tax returns until November 21, instead of the earlier deadline of October 31. Similarly, the due date for submitting tax audit reports has been moved from September 30 to October 21.
Both deadlines have therefore been extended by 21 days.
Why Has the ITR Deadline Been Extended?
Tax professionals had been seeking additional time, particularly because of the tight schedule between the various compliance deadlines. They pointed out that taxpayers who were not subject to mandatory audits had an ITR filing deadline of August 31, leaving limited time for completing the audit-related work required for other taxpayers.
According to Amit Agarwal, Senior Partner at Nangia & Co. LLP, the CBDT’s decision recognises the practical difficulties being faced by businesses and tax professionals. He said the additional 21 days would give companies more time to complete audits, reconcile their accounts and verify the supporting documents and information included in their tax returns.
Revised ITR and Tax Audit Deadlines
With the latest extension, the tax audit report deadline has moved to October 21, while the income tax return deadline for companies has been extended to November 21.
The extension is specifically relevant to taxpayers covered under the applicable audit requirements for the Assessment Year 2026-27. It is intended to provide additional time for completing the compliance process and ensuring that the information reported in tax returns is properly checked.
What Were the Deadlines for Other Taxpayers?
The deadlines for taxpayers outside these categories were different. Salaried individuals were required to file their income tax returns by July 31, while taxpayers earning income from business or employment who were not required to get their accounts audited had a deadline of August 31.
The Income Tax Department had earlier reported that more than 7.8 crore income tax returns had been filed by August 31 for the Assessment Year 2026-27. This was described as a record number of ITR filings.
