If you have filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) but have not yet received the expected refund, there could be several reasons behind the delay. A deactivated PAN due to incomplete PAN-Aadhaar linking, incorrect bank details, or failure to verify the return can prevent the refund from being processed.
The Income Tax Department advises taxpayers to check their PAN-Aadhaar linking status, bank account details and ITR verification status if the refund has not been credited.
Check Your PAN-Aadhaar Linking Status
For taxpayers who are required to link their PAN with Aadhaar, failure to complete the process can result in the PAN becoming inactive. If the PAN is inactive, the income tax refund may not be issued.
You can check the PAN-Aadhaar linking status without necessarily logging into the Income Tax e-filing portal. Follow these steps:
- Visit the official Income Tax Department website.
- Go to the Quick Links section.
- Select Link Aadhaar, View Status or Link Aadhaar Status, as applicable.
- Enter your PAN number.
- Enter your Aadhaar number.
- Click on View Link Aadhaar Status.
The portal will then display whether your PAN and Aadhaar are successfully linked.
Bank Details and ITR Verification Can Also Affect Refunds
PAN-Aadhaar linking is not the only factor that can delay an income tax refund. Problems with bank account details can also prevent the refund from being credited.
Taxpayers should check whether the bank account details provided in the ITR are correct. Errors such as an incorrect IFSC code, incorrect account information or a mismatch between the name on the bank account and the PAN details may lead to refund-related issues.
It is also important to complete ITR verification after filing the return. Filing the ITR alone does not complete the process. The return must be e-verified or the ITR-V process must be completed within the prescribed period. According to the information provided, verification needs to be completed within 30 days of filing the return. Failing to verify the return within the applicable timeframe may affect its validity.
How to Check ITR Refund Status
Taxpayers can check their refund status through the Income Tax e-filing portal. The process is:
- Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
- Go to e-File.
- Select Income Tax Return.
- Click on View Filed Returns.
- Select the relevant assessment year.
- Click on View Details to see the current refund status.
If the refund has already been issued but has not reached your bank account, you may be able to submit a refund re-issue request through the e-filing portal.
How to Request Refund Re-Issue
Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal and go to Services. Select Refund Re-issue and then choose Create Refund Re-issue Request. Select the relevant refund record and click Continue.
Next, choose a validated bank account where you want the refund to be credited and proceed to verification. Complete the e-verification using one of the available methods. Once verification is successful, the refund re-issue request will be submitted.
Remember that having an active bank account is not enough. The account must also be validated on the Income Tax e-filing portal. If the bank account has not been validated, complete the validation process before submitting a refund re-issue request.
