That familiar “tick-tick” noise you hear whenever you turn on your car’s indicator is something most drivers barely notice. But the sound has a practical purpose. It is designed to keep drivers aware that the turn signal is active and prevent them from accidentally leaving it switched on.

When you make a turn or change lanes, the indicator tells other road users what you intend to do. Once the manoeuvre is complete, however, drivers can sometimes forget to turn the signal off. The repeated ticking provides an audible reminder, helping prevent a driver from continuing down the road with the indicator flashing unnecessarily.

How Is the Indicator Ticking Sound Produced?

In older vehicles, the sound was closely connected to the mechanical operation of the turn-signal system. Cars used a component known as a flasher relay, which contained a small metal strip.

When electricity passed through the component, the strip heated up and bent. As it cooled, it returned to its original position. This repeated process switched the indicator on and off, producing both the flashing light and the characteristic ticking sound.

Modern cars work differently. Most newer vehicles use electronic control systems and microchips instead of traditional mechanical relays. Despite this technological change, manufacturers have retained the familiar sound.

In many modern vehicles, the ticking is electronically generated and played through the dashboard or the car’s speaker system. This gives the driver the same audible feedback even though the underlying mechanism is no longer mechanical.

The Sound Also Helps Detect Indicator Problems

The ticking noise is not only about convenience. It can also provide useful feedback about the condition of the turn-signal system.

Drivers may notice that the sound becomes noticeably faster or changes from its normal rhythm when there is an issue with the indicator. This can happen because of a blown indicator bulb or an electrical problem.

As a result, the familiar sound can serve as an additional warning that something in the signalling system may need attention.

Why Modern Cars Still Have the Tick-Tick Sound

With modern vehicles becoming increasingly electronic and electric, it might seem unnecessary to retain a sound that originated from older mechanical systems. However, automakers continue to use it because it helps maintain driver awareness.

The sound provides immediate confirmation that the indicator has been activated and serves as a reminder when the signal remains on after a turn or lane change.

Some premium vehicles even offer options to customise certain cabin sounds. Completely eliminating the indicator feedback, however, is rarely an option.

Ultimately, the simple “tick-tick” heard when using a car’s indicators is more than just a familiar automotive sound. It is a small but useful feature designed to provide feedback, improve driver awareness and support safer driving.
