The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) begins its three-day meeting today, with financial markets watching closely for signals on the central bank’s next interest-rate move. Rising global crude oil prices and persistent domestic inflation have added uncertainty ahead of the policy announcement scheduled for October 7.

The six-member MPC, headed by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, will assess the latest economic conditions before deciding on the benchmark repo rate. The RBI has kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% during its last four policy reviews after cutting rates by a cumulative 125 basis points in 2025.

Inflation and Crude Oil Create Fresh Pressure

The current economic environment has become more challenging for the central bank. Retail inflation rose to an eight-month high of 4.82% in August, remaining above the RBI’s 4% target for the third consecutive month.

At the same time, renewed geopolitical tensions in West Asia have pushed international crude oil prices higher. Brent crude has moved above the $100-per-barrel mark, increasing concerns about imported inflation and putting additional pressure on India’s current account balance.

Higher crude prices can also raise transportation and energy costs, potentially increasing prices across several sections of the economy.

Rate Hike Expectations Increase

The combination of elevated inflation, expensive crude oil and a weaker rupee has increased expectations of a possible rate hike. The shift in global monetary policy has added to the uncertainty, with several major central banks maintaining tighter policy settings.

A Reuters poll conducted ahead of the MPC review showed that nearly 60% of economists expected the RBI to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points in October.

If the RBI opts for such an increase, the repo rate would rise from 5.25% to 5.50%.

However, a rate increase is not considered certain. Some analysts believe the central bank could maintain the existing rate to support domestic demand, particularly with the peak festive season approaching.

What the RBI May Decide

Market participants and research firms remain divided over the MPC’s next move. One group expects the RBI to increase rates by 25 basis points to contain inflationary pressures and keep inflation expectations anchored.

Others believe the central bank may prefer to wait and assess how long elevated crude oil prices persist before tightening monetary policy. A higher interest rate could help address inflation concerns but may also affect borrowing costs and consumer demand.

The MPC’s October 7 decision will therefore be closely watched, particularly for indications of how the RBI plans to balance inflation risks, crude oil volatility and economic growth.
