Ration Rule Changes: Ration card holders who face difficulties with fingerprint authentication can now use a new method to verify their identity. The government has introduced face authentication in the ration distribution system, allowing beneficiaries to complete verification through facial recognition when fingerprint matching does not work.

The new facility was launched on October 1, 2026, with the aim of making ration distribution more convenient for beneficiaries who frequently face problems with biometric authentication. However, the facility is currently available only at ration shops where the required technical infrastructure has been upgraded.

How Face Authentication Works at Ration Shops

Earlier, beneficiaries had to verify their identity by placing their thumb or finger on an e-POS machine while collecting food grains. Fingerprint authentication could sometimes fail because of network problems, technical issues with the machine or poor fingerprint quality.

Under the new system, the existing biometric verification process remains the first step. If the fingerprint fails to match, the beneficiary can choose the face authentication option.

The camera available on the e-POS machine scans the beneficiary’s face. The captured facial information is then matched with the beneficiary’s details available in the Aadhaar database. Once the identity is successfully verified, the beneficiary can collect the allotted ration.

Why the New System Can Help Senior Citizens and Workers

The face authentication facility can be particularly useful for people whose fingerprints are difficult for biometric machines to recognize.

Senior citizens may experience changes or fading of fingerprints with age, which can sometimes affect biometric verification. Similarly, people involved in heavy manual work may have damaged or worn fingerprints because of the nature of their work.

For such beneficiaries, facial authentication provides an alternative verification method when fingerprint-based authentication does not work, making the ration collection process more convenient.

Availability of the feature may depend on the technical infrastructure at individual ration shops. Beneficiaries should check with their local ration shop or concerned government department for the latest information and applicable procedures.
