New Delhi: Railway employees are awaiting an update on the Productivity-Linked Bonus (PLB), with the Union Cabinet expected to consider the annual bonus proposal during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, October 14. Employees’ representatives have been seeking a revision to the existing calculation method, arguing that the salary limit used to determine the bonus has not changed for years.
At present, eligible non-gazetted railway employees receive a bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages, calculated using a salary ceiling of ₹7,000. Under the existing formula, the bonus amount comes to ₹17,951. Employee associations are demanding a higher ceiling that could increase the annual payout.
However, the Cabinet’s consideration of the proposal does not mean that an increase has been approved. The final decision and any revised bonus amount will depend on an official government announcement.
Railway Employees Demand Higher Bonus of ₹46,184
The current salary ceiling used to calculate the railway employees’ Productivity-Linked Bonus has remained unchanged since the 2014-15 financial year. This has led to calls for the government to revise the limit to reflect changing salary levels.
The Indian Railways Technical Supervisors’ Association (IRTSA) has proposed increasing the calculation ceiling to ₹18,000 plus dearness allowance (DA) for employees at Level 2 and above.
The association has argued that the existing limit needs to be reviewed, pointing to the minimum salary of ₹21,000 cited for unskilled workers. Based on its proposed calculation, IRTSA has demanded an annual bonus of at least ₹46,184.
If the government accepts the proposal, the change could lead to a higher bonus for eligible employees. However, the demanded amount is not confirmed, and the final payout will depend on the government’s decision.
Current Railway Bonus Amount and Expected Decision
Under the existing arrangement, eligible non-gazetted railway employees receive a bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages, subject to the prescribed salary ceiling. The resulting payout is ₹17,951.
Employees are now looking for clarity on whether the government will revise the calculation limit or retain the existing structure for the relevant financial year.
A Cabinet discussion alone does not confirm an increase. Railway employees should wait for an official announcement from the government or the Railway Ministry before treating any proposed amount as final.
Railway Board Warns Employees About Fake Bonus Letter
The Railway Board has also issued a warning about a fraudulent letter circulating on social media. The document reportedly claimed that a bonus of ₹41,149 had been approved for railway employees for the 2025-26 financial year.
The Board clarified that the letter was fake, contained forged signatures and had not been issued by the authorities. Railway offices were instructed not to act on the document, while employees were advised to verify bonus-related updates through official channels.
The warning highlights the importance of checking the authenticity of messages and documents before relying on information shared online.
What Railway Employees Should Know
For now, the existing bonus amount remains ₹17,951, while the employee association’s demand stands at ₹46,184. Whether the salary ceiling will be revised and the bonus increased remains subject to an official decision.
Railway employees should avoid assuming that a proposed Cabinet discussion means the higher amount has been approved. The confirmed bonus amount and payment details should be taken only from an official government or Railway Ministry announcement.
