New Delhi: A fresh western disturbance over northern India, along with the development of the northeast monsoon over the southern peninsula, is expected to bring rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds and isolated hailstorms to several parts of the country.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions are becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon to withdraw from the remaining parts of India. The seasonal transition is expected to bring changing weather patterns, with cooler conditions across northern regions and an extended spell of rain in several southern and eastern areas through October 19.
Delhi-NCR and neighbouring states are likely to experience changing weather conditions, while parts of southern India are expected to receive heavy rainfall as the northeast monsoon becomes active.
Delhi-NCR Weather Forecast: Rain and Strong Winds Expected
Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) are forecast to receive rain and thunderstorms on October 15. The IMD has predicted very light to light showers at many places, with moderate rainfall possible in isolated areas.
Thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 40–50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph, are likely during the afternoon and evening. Another spell of rain or thunderstorms may occur at night.
The forecast covers Delhi and nearby cities, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. However, rainfall intensity may vary across different localities.
Showers may continue on October 16, with thunderstorms possible from early morning until noon. Conditions are expected to become relatively dry from October 17, when partly cloudy skies and maximum temperatures of 31–33°C are forecast.
The change is likely to bring relief from the relatively warm conditions recorded earlier in the week. On Wednesday, Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 33.3°C without rainfall. During the current forecast period, Delhi’s daytime temperature is expected to remain around 28–30°C, while the minimum may range between 19°C and 21°C.
Western Disturbance Brings Rain Across Northern India
The active western disturbance is expected to affect several northern and northwestern states, bringing showers, thunderstorms and the possibility of isolated hailstorms.
According to the IMD forecast, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are likely to experience fairly widespread rainfall and thunderstorms on October 14 and 15. Strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph, may accompany the weather activity.
Rain and thunderstorms are also expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
The forecast indicates that rainfall activity may continue in eastern Rajasthan until October 16, while western Rajasthan could receive rain through October 15. Western Uttar Pradesh is also expected to experience rainfall until October 16.
Uttarakhand may witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds. Isolated hailstorms are possible in parts of the northern region, although conditions may differ from one location to another.
Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal and Northeast Monsoon Onset
The IMD has indicated that conditions are becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon to withdraw completely from the remaining parts of the country.
As the southwest monsoon retreats, the northeast monsoon is expected to become active over the southern peninsula from October 15. This seasonal transition is likely to bring a fresh spell of rainfall across several southern states and Union Territories.
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Karaikal and Mahe are among the regions expected to experience significant rainfall during this period.
The changing monsoon pattern marks a shift in rainfall activity, with northern India experiencing weather disturbances linked to the western disturbance while southern areas prepare for the northeast monsoon season.
Heavy Rain Alert Across Southern States Until October 19
The IMD’s rainfall warnings extend through October 19 for several parts of southern India. As the northeast monsoon becomes established, sustained rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.
Some areas may experience heavy downpours, while thunderstorms and strong winds could affect local conditions. In northern regions, gusty winds and isolated hailstorms may temporarily disrupt road travel, reduce visibility and affect agricultural activities in exposed areas.
Residents in affected locations should follow local weather advisories and take appropriate precautions during thunderstorms and periods of heavy rainfall.
With the western disturbance influencing northern India and the northeast monsoon becoming active in the south, weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled across several states over the coming days.
