A viral video from Gujarat’s Vapi town shows more than 50 vehicles submerged after record-breaking rainfall triggered severe flooding across Valsad district, prompting large-scale evacuations and a red alert from the IMD.
Gujarat witnessed one of its most intense spells of monsoon rainfall on Thursday, with Valsad district bearing the brunt of the downpour. A dramatic video from Vapi has gone viral on social media, showing over 50 cars almost completely submerged as floodwaters engulfed residential areas following relentless rain.
The visuals highlight the scale of destruction caused by the heavy rainfall, with entire parking lots, roads and neighbourhoods disappearing under water.
Viral Video Captures Cars Submerged in Floodwater
The widely shared video, filmed from the upper floors of a nearby building, shows floodwater rapidly filling a residential parking area. Several parked vehicles can be seen nearly submerged, with water levels rising up to the windows of the cars.
The surrounding streets and residential colonies were also flooded, leaving normal life disrupted and underscoring the severity of the ongoing monsoon situation in the region.
Valsad Records Massive 1,100 mm Rainfall in Just 16 Hours
According to data released by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Umbergaon taluka in Valsad recorded an extraordinary 1,100 mm of rainfall within just 16 hours until Thursday morning.
Several other talukas in the district also received more than 600 mm of rain during the same period, making Valsad the worst-affected district in Gujarat during the latest spell of heavy monsoon showers.
Rivers Overflow as Flooding Worsens
The unprecedented rainfall caused the Auranga, Par and Daman Ganga rivers to overflow, inundating several low-lying areas across the district.
As water levels rose rapidly, local authorities launched evacuation operations to move residents from vulnerable locations to safer areas.
According to officials quoted by PTI, more than 2,200 people living in flood-prone parts of Surat city were shifted to safer shelters as a precautionary measure.
IMD Issues Red Alert for Five Gujarat Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Valsad, Navsari, Dangs, Surat and Tapi districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over Thursday and Friday.
Authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert as rescue teams continue relief operations and monitor rising water levels across affected regions.
Gujarat Government Steps Up Rescue and Relief Efforts
In response to the worsening flood situation, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has deployed several state ministers to the rain-hit districts to oversee rescue operations and coordinate relief measures.
The ministers have been tasked with working closely with district administrations to ensure timely assistance, rehabilitation efforts and effective management of the ongoing monsoon emergency.
As heavy rain continues to batter parts of southern Gujarat, officials have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, follow weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
