Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, best known for his record-breaking feat featured in Netflix’s 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, is feared missing after an avalanche reportedly struck a climbing expedition on Broad Peak in Pakistan. Rescue efforts are now underway as authorities race against time to locate the team.
Avalanche Hits International Climbing Expedition
The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed on Thursday that it had received alarming reports of an avalanche impacting a group of mountaineers on Broad Peak around midday. Since the incident, the expedition team has reportedly lost all communication, raising fears about the safety of everyone involved.
Preliminary information suggests that around 10 climbers were part of the expedition, including nationals from Pakistan, Oman, China and the United States. Nirmal Purja, who was leading the team, is among those currently unaccounted for.
Search And Rescue Operation Underway
Following the incident, the Alpine Club said it immediately coordinated with government authorities and rescue agencies to launch an emergency search operation.
Officials stated that every effort is being made to deploy helicopters and specialised rescue teams as quickly as possible. However, the operation will depend heavily on weather conditions and the challenging terrain of the Karakoram mountain range.
Broad Peak, standing at 8,047 metres, is the 12th-highest mountain in the world and is known for its steep slopes, harsh weather and unpredictable avalanche risks, making rescue missions particularly difficult.

Nirmal Purja, widely recognised as “Nimsdai,” is a British-Nepali mountaineer celebrated for rewriting the history of high-altitude climbing.
In 2019, he achieved the extraordinary feat of scaling all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in just six months and six days, shattering the previous world record of nearly seven years. His remarkable journey was documented in the acclaimed Netflix film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, earning him worldwide recognition.
From British Army To Mountaineering Legend
Born in Nepal, Purja served for 16 years in the British military, including with the elite Gurkhas and the UK Special Forces, before pursuing professional mountaineering.
His climbing career began in 2012 with the ascent of Lobuche East, a 6,119-metre peak in Nepal. Over the following years, he successfully summited some of the world’s most dangerous mountains, including Mount Everest, K2, and every other peak standing above 8,000 metres.
