Mumbai: Passengers travelling during the Diwali and Chhath Puja festive season may face new restrictions at several major railway stations in Mumbai. To manage the expected rush and prevent overcrowding, Central Railway has temporarily stopped the sale of platform tickets at five important stations.
The restriction will remain in force from November 5 to November 15. During this period, only passengers holding valid train tickets will generally be allowed to enter the platforms and station premises at the affected stations.
Here is a look at which stations are covered by the restriction, who can receive exemptions and why the Railways has taken this step.

Platform Ticket Sales Suspended at These 5 Mumbai Stations
Central Railway has announced a temporary suspension of platform ticket sales at five major railway stations in Mumbai.
The affected stations are:
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)
- Dadar
- Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)
- Thane
- Kalyan
The restrictions will apply from November 5 to November 15. During this period, people without valid train tickets will generally not be permitted to enter the platforms by purchasing platform tickets.
Who Can Enter Railway Stations Without a Train Ticket?
Although platform ticket sales have been suspended, certain people may be allowed to enter the stations if they need to assist passengers.
These exemptions include people accompanying elderly passengers, helping sick individuals or assisting children. Women passengers who require assistance at the station may also be covered under the exemption.
Such entry will remain subject to the applicable railway rules and permissions.
Why Has Central Railway Suspended Platform Ticket Sales?
The decision has been taken in view of the expected increase in passenger traffic during Diwali and Chhath Puja.
During these festivals, thousands of people travel by train to reach their hometowns and celebrate with their families. Mumbai’s major railway stations experience heavy crowds, including people who arrive to drop off or receive relatives.
Managing such large gatherings becomes difficult, particularly on crowded platforms. By temporarily stopping platform ticket sales, Central Railway aims to reduce unnecessary footfall, control congestion and ensure smoother passenger movement.
Passengers planning to travel from CSMT, Dadar, LTT, Thane or Kalyan should keep these restrictions in mind and arrange their station visits accordingly.
