Starting a new business or expanding an existing MSME often requires significant funding. For entrepreneurs who may not have property or other assets to offer as security, several government-backed credit schemes provide access to collateral-free finance, subject to eligibility and lender approval.
The MSME sector has access to schemes covering different types of business requirements. However, getting a loan is not automatic. Applicants need to meet the applicable eligibility conditions, provide accurate information and submit the required documents.
Government Schemes for Collateral-Free MSME Loans
The Credit Guarantee Scheme for Micro and Small Enterprises, implemented through CGTMSE, supports credit facilities without collateral security or third-party guarantees. The guarantee ceiling under the scheme was increased to ₹10 crore from April 1, 2025.
The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) also provides collateral-free institutional credit to eligible micro enterprises. Its loan categories include Shishu, Kishor, Tarun and Tarun Plus. Under Tarun Plus, eligible entrepreneurs who have successfully repaid a previous Tarun loan can access loans above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹20 lakh.
The PSB Loans in 59 Minutes platform is another digital route for MSME business loans. Current bank information shows that applications ranging from ₹2 lakh to ₹5 crore can be submitted through the platform, which provides an in-principle decision digitally within 59 minutes. Final sanction and disbursement remain subject to the lender’s assessment and conditions.
How to Apply for an MSME Loan
The application process generally starts online. Applicants need to select the relevant business-loan option, create an account where required and provide their personal as well as business details.
The applicant must then specify the required loan amount and submit the relevant financial and business information. Depending on the scheme and lender, documents and data such as GST details, income-tax records and bank statements may be required.
After submission, the application is assessed according to the applicable eligibility criteria and the lender’s policies. An in-principle approval through a digital platform does not necessarily mean that the loan has been finally sanctioned; the bank may carry out further verification before disbursement.
Documents Required for an MSME Loan
The exact paperwork can vary depending on the loan scheme, lender and applicant. Commonly requested documents may include the loan application form, passport-size photographs, PAN card, Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID or driving licence, address proof, business-related documents, age proof, bank statements, income documents and income-tax return records.
Applicants should ensure that the information provided in the application matches their financial and business records. Keeping the required documents ready can help make the application process smoother.
Before applying, borrowers should check the current eligibility requirements, loan terms, applicable charges and collateral conditions of the particular scheme and lender.
