Domestic LPG consumers who want to continue booking refills at the regulated Retail Selling Price (RSP) with applicable subsidy will need to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) before October 1, 2026.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the requirement is aimed at ensuring that subsidised LPG reaches genuine and eligible households. Linking LPG connections with Aadhaar-authenticated consumers is also intended to help identify duplicate or ineligible connections and reduce the diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial and industrial use.
As of September 19, 2026, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9% of the total, had already completed the authentication process. Those consumers do not need to complete it again.
What Will Change From October 1?
Consumers who have already completed BAA will continue to receive LPG refills as before.
For those who have not completed the authentication, booking a refill at the regulated price with subsidy will be enabled after the BAA process is completed.
Consumers who do not wish to complete BAA can still receive LPG. They will need to register their preference through the digital channels provided by their oil marketing company (OMC), such as the consumer website, mobile app, WhatsApp chatbot or IVRS.
In such cases, LPG will be supplied at the applicable market price without subsidy, in 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders, subject to availability with the concerned OMC.
How to Complete LPG Aadhaar Authentication
Consumers have several options to complete the biometric verification.
The process can be completed during refill delivery, when the delivery person uses the OMC’s mobile application to carry out authentication at the customer’s doorstep. Consumers can also visit their LPG distributor’s showroom for the process.
Another option is to complete the authentication from home through the respective OMC’s mobile application. Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL, while HP Gas customers can use HP PAY.
How Much Is the LPG Subsidy?
According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, domestic LPG is currently sold below its cost. The implicit subsidy for September 2026 is around ₹210 per 14.2 kg cylinder. In June 2026, the figure had reached ₹721 per cylinder.
The government said it paid ₹22,000 crore in compensation to oil marketing companies during FY 2022-23 and is paying ₹30,000 crore during FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27 to support domestic LPG affordability. Despite this, the accumulated under-recoveries of public-sector OMCs on domestic LPG exceeded ₹62,000 crore as of August 31, 2026.
What Is Biometric Aadhaar Authentication?
Biometric Aadhaar Authentication is a consent-based identity verification process that uses an individual’s Aadhaar-linked biometric information. Depending on the authentication method, biometric identifiers can include fingerprints, iris information or facial recognition.
The objective is to verify the identity of the consumer and help ensure that subsidy benefits are directed to the intended beneficiaries.
