Jeep is exploring the possibility of bringing back its historic Willys name as a compact, affordable electric SUV. The original Willys gained worldwide recognition for its role in military operations during World War II, and the brand may now draw on that legacy to develop a modern electric off-roader.
Xavier Peugeot, head of Jeep Europe, discussed the possibility with Autocar UK, indicating that the Willys name remains relevant to the company’s future plans. However, Jeep has not officially approved the project or announced a production schedule.
Jeep Willys EV Design: Rugged Styling Could Continue
A recent teaser released by Stellantis has offered a possible preview of the concept behind the proposed Willys-inspired SUV. The image features the original Willys MB military vehicle alongside the outline of a larger, boxy SUV with a fixed roof and a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate.
The silhouette suggests that Jeep could retain the traditional styling associated with its off-road vehicles, including an upright stance and a rugged exterior. The teaser also carries the words “Not Fragile”, pointing towards a possible emphasis on durability and off-road performance.
However, the company has not confirmed whether the vehicle shown in the teaser represents the final design of the proposed electric SUV. Its exterior details and production specifications remain unannounced.
Platform and Powertrain: Could the Willys EV Get 4×4 Capability?
The potential Willys EV could be developed using an affordable electric vehicle platform currently being worked on by Stellantis. The architecture is intended for smaller electric vehicles and could support models designed around the European Union’s proposed E-car regulations.
The same platform is also expected to underpin the production version of the recently showcased Citroën 2CV concept. Affordability is likely to be an important factor in Jeep’s future electric vehicle plans, suggesting that the Willys could occupy a more accessible position in the brand’s lineup.
Peugeot has also indicated that future Jeep models would be compatible with four-wheel-drive technology. If applied to the proposed Willys EV, this could give the electric SUV a 4×4 option and help distinguish it from other affordable electric vehicles developed within the Stellantis group.
Jeep has not yet disclosed details about the proposed model’s battery, driving range, motor configuration or charging capabilities.
Jeep Willys EV Launch Timeline and Future Plans
Jeep is expected to consider the Willys revival after completing its current “Road to 2030” strategy. Peugeot has suggested that the company could offer greater clarity on the historic nameplate before the end of the decade, although no specific launch year has been confirmed.
The proposed electric SUV could also support Jeep’s wider efforts to strengthen its position in Europe. The region’s electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly competitive, including as Chinese manufacturers expand their presence.
For now, the return of the Willys remains under consideration rather than a confirmed production programme. More information about its design, platform and potential launch may emerge as Jeep develops its longer-term plans.
