FASTag Update: There is good news for FASTag users across India. Vehicle owners will soon be able to change the bank linked to their FASTag without removing the existing sticker from their vehicle. This new facility is designed to make FASTag more convenient and flexible for users.

The new ‘OneTag’ system was announced by Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari during the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. Similar to mobile number portability, the facility will allow users to move their existing NETC FASTag from one bank to another while retaining the same physical tag.

Under this system, users can keep their existing FASTag sticker, tag ID and vehicle registration details while switching to another participating bank. The facility is expected to be accessible through the government’s Rajmargyatra mobile application.

What Is the OneTag FASTag Portability System?

OneTag is a FASTag portability facility developed jointly by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

The system works through the existing National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) network. This means toll plazas do not need to install separate equipment or create an entirely new infrastructure to support the facility.

The biggest benefit for vehicle owners is that they can change their FASTag service provider without having to replace the physical sticker attached to their vehicle.

How to Change Your FASTag Bank Through OneTag?

The process is expected to be straightforward. Users can follow these steps:

Step 1: Open Rajmargyatra App

Download or open the official NHAI Rajmargyatra mobile application and go to the FASTag-related section.

Step 2: Check FASTag Eligibility

Enter the required vehicle information and details associated with your existing FASTag. The system will check whether your tag is eligible for portability.

After eligibility is confirmed, provide the required consent to transfer your FASTag banking relationship.

Step 4: Select a New Bank

Choose the bank you want to link with your existing FASTag. Several banks have already joined the initiative, including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and Airtel Payments Bank.

Step 5: Complete Verification

The selected bank will complete its onboarding process and carry out the required customer verification formalities.

Step 6: FASTag Gets Linked to the New Bank

Once all formalities are completed successfully, your existing FASTag will be associated with the new bank.

What Happens to the Old Bank and FASTag Balance?

Switching banks does not mean that pending transactions are simply ignored. The previous FASTag issuer will first handle any pending transactions, refunds or balance-related settlements associated with the old account.

After the portability process is completed, the new bank will take responsibility for future toll deductions and FASTag account management.

Therefore, users should check their existing account and outstanding transactions before initiating the transfer.

Do You Need a New FASTag Sticker After Changing Banks?

This is one of the biggest advantages of the OneTag system.

Earlier, changing the FASTag-issuing bank generally meant closing the existing FASTag account, obtaining a fresh FASTag from the new bank and putting a new sticker on the vehicle.

With OneTag portability, users can retain their existing physical FASTag sticker and tag ID while changing the bank associated with it.

In other words, FASTag users will no longer have to go through the hassle of removing the old sticker and installing another one simply because they want to switch banks.

OneTag Could Make FASTag More Convenient

The introduction of FASTag portability is expected to give vehicle owners greater freedom when choosing their banking service provider. Users will be able to switch banks without changing the physical tag, making the process more convenient and reducing the hassle associated with replacing FASTag stickers.

The OneTag facility therefore represents a significant change in the way FASTag services can be managed, particularly for customers who are unhappy with their current issuer or want to move to another participating bank.
