EPFO Update: There is an important change for employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month. The wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage has been increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month.

The revised limit came into effect from September 17, 2026. According to the government, the change is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under mandatory EPFO coverage.

The revised ceiling means eligible employees in the ₹15,000–₹25,000 wage range can come under the EPFO framework and receive benefits under the applicable EPF, EPS and EDLI provisions.

What Happens If Your Monthly Salary Is ₹20,000?

Consider an employee joining an EPFO-covered establishment with a monthly wage of ₹20,000. Under the earlier ₹15,000 ceiling, an employee joining at a wage above ₹15,000 was not automatically covered under the mandatory EPF framework, subject to applicable provisions.

With the revised ₹25,000 ceiling, employees in the ₹15,000–₹25,000 range are brought within the mandatory coverage framework. Eligible workers can therefore get access to provident fund savings, pension benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and insurance protection under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI), as applicable.

What About Employees Earning ₹10,000?

Employees earning ₹10,000 per month were already within the earlier EPFO wage ceiling of ₹15,000, subject to the applicable rules. Therefore, the increase to ₹25,000 does not represent a new coverage threshold for this salary group.

The main change is for employees whose wages were above the earlier ₹15,000 ceiling but are now within the revised ₹25,000 limit.

EPFO Wage Ceiling Revised After 12 Years

The EPFO wage ceiling was last increased to ₹15,000 in September 2014 and remained unchanged for around 12 years. The government has now raised it to ₹25,000, citing changes in wage levels and the expansion of formal employment.

The government estimates that the revised ceiling will bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under mandatory EPFO coverage. The estimated annual government outgo associated with the enhancement is around ₹11,339 crore, compared with existing annual budgetary support of about ₹10,250 crore. The estimated expenditure over five years is approximately ₹56,696 crore.

For employees already covered by EPFO and earning above ₹25,000, the revised measure should be understood primarily as a change in the mandatory coverage wage ceiling. The applicable contribution and scheme provisions continue to govern how their PF benefits and contributions are determined.
