The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for employers to submit the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) for September 2026. Employers will now have until October 31 to complete the filing and deposit the required provident fund contributions, instead of the earlier deadline of October 15.
The 16-day extension gives companies additional time to review payroll records and calculate contributions following the revision of the provident fund wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, notified on September 17, 2026.
Why Has the September PF Filing Deadline Changed?
The ECR is a monthly electronic return that records employee-wise wage details and contributions under the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme.
September’s filing requires particular attention because the wage ceiling changed during the month. Employers must review the applicable rules for the periods before and after September 17 rather than automatically using the same ceiling for the entire month.
The earlier wage ceiling was ₹15,000, while the revised ceiling is ₹25,000 from September 17, subject to the relevant scheme provisions and employee eligibility.
Importantly, the revised ceiling does not automatically mean that every employee’s PF contributions must be calculated on ₹25,000. Employers should verify the applicable contribution base and individual eligibility before submitting their returns.
What Employers and Employees Should Check
Employers should use the extended deadline to reconcile salary records, review employee eligibility and verify contribution calculations. The employee-wise information submitted through the ECR must match the relevant payroll records.
Companies should also ensure that contributions have been calculated correctly for the applicable periods and complete the required filing and payment procedures by October 31. Keeping supporting documents and checking employee details before submission can help avoid discrepancies in statutory records.
Employees can also review their salary slips and EPFO passbooks to check whether their PF contributions have been credited correctly. If any discrepancy appears, they should contact their employer’s HR or payroll department for clarification.
EPFO Amnesty Scheme 2026: December 28 Deadline
Separately, the EPFO has announced December 28, 2026, as the deadline for eligible establishments seeking retrospective regularisation of the exempt status of their provident fund trusts under the EPFO Amnesty Scheme 2026.
Certain establishments operate their own provident fund trusts instead of depositing contributions directly with the EPFO, subject to the applicable regulatory approvals and compliance requirements. The amnesty scheme offers eligible establishments an opportunity to regularise their status retrospectively, subject to its conditions.
According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s statement dated October 13, the scheme provides waivers for certain requirements, including minimum employee strength, corpus size and the three-year compliance rule.
The EPFO has also been conducting awareness programmes with industry bodies and professional organisations to explain the scheme and its application process.
Important EPFO Dates for Employers
Employers should keep both deadlines in mind. October 31, 2026, is the revised deadline for submitting the September ECR, while December 28, 2026, is the deadline for eligible establishments applying for regularisation under the amnesty scheme.
The immediate priority for employers is to verify September payroll and contribution records, follow the applicable PF rules and complete the monthly filing within the extended period.
