EPFO Rules: Withdrawing money from a Provident Fund (PF) account can often seem complicated, especially when you are unemployed or have recently resigned from your job. However, changes introduced by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) have simplified the withdrawal process and reduced the number of withdrawal categories.
Under the revised system, several earlier conditions have been consolidated into three broad categories. This makes it easier for EPF members to understand when and how they can access their accumulated PF savings.
EPFO Simplifies PF Withdrawal Rules
Earlier, EPFO had 13 different conditions and categories under which members could make PF withdrawals. The system has now been streamlined into three main categories, making the rules easier to understand.
One of these categories deals with emergency and essential financial requirements. Eligible members can withdraw PF money for certain important expenses, including medical treatment for family members, children’s education and family weddings.
Withdrawals may also be permitted for housing-related needs. These can include purchasing or constructing a house, carrying out repairs or renovations, or repaying a home loan.
In addition, employees can withdraw up to 75% of their PF balance without giving a specific reason, subject to the applicable EPFO rules and conditions.
What Happens to Your PF Money After You Lose Your Job?
One of the important changes concerns PF withdrawals after unemployment or resignation.
If an employee becomes unemployed, up to 75% of the PF balance can be withdrawn immediately after becoming unemployed, according to the revised rules. The remaining 25% can be withdrawn after completing 12 months of continuous unemployment.
This is different from the earlier provision, under which an employee could withdraw the entire PF amount after remaining unemployed for two months.
The revised approach is intended to ensure that members retain a portion of their retirement savings for their future financial needs instead of withdrawing the complete amount immediately after leaving employment.
How to Withdraw PF Money Online
EPFO members can submit their PF withdrawal claims online through the EPFO member portal. The process generally involves the following steps:
Step 1: Log in to the EPFO Portal
Visit the EPFO Member Portal and sign in using your UAN and password.
Step 2: Check Your Date of Exit
Before submitting a claim, make sure your date of leaving the job has been correctly updated on the EPFO portal.
Step 3: Go to Online Services
After logging in, open the ‘Online Services’ section and select the ‘Claim’ option.
Step 4: Verify Your Bank Account
Enter the last four digits of your registered bank account number when prompted to verify your details.
Step 5: Select the Appropriate Form
Choose the relevant withdrawal option. Form 19 is used for PF final settlement, while Form 10C is associated with pension-related benefits, where applicable.
Step 6: Complete Aadhaar OTP Verification
An OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar. Enter the OTP to authenticate the claim and click ‘Submit’.
When Will the PF Amount Be Credited?
Once the claim is successfully submitted and the member’s details are accurate, the withdrawal amount is generally credited to the registered bank account within 3 to 7 days, subject to claim processing and verification.
Therefore, employees planning to withdraw their PF after resignation or job loss should ensure that their UAN, Aadhaar, bank account and employment details are properly updated before submitting the claim.
Note: PF withdrawal eligibility and applicable limits can depend on the type of claim and the EPFO rules in force at the time of application. Members should check the latest EPFO provisions before submitting a withdrawal request.
