The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) for September 2026 to October 31, 2026. The extension gives employers additional time to complete their PF return filings following changes to the salary limit for mandatory provident fund contributions.

Provident Fund (PF) contributions are an important part of retirement savings for salaried employees, with both employees and employers contributing under the applicable rules. Employers must submit accurate salary and contribution details to EPFO within the prescribed deadline.

What Information Must Employers Submit Through ECR?

The Electronic Challan-cum-Return is used by employers to report employee salary details and provident fund contributions. The filing includes information relating to three key schemes: the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme.

Employers must ensure that the salary figures and contributions reported in the return are accurate and comply with the applicable rules. Timely filing helps maintain proper records of employees’ PF contributions and related benefits.

Why Has EPFO Extended the PF Return Deadline?

The original deadline for filing the September 2026 PF return was October 15. EPFO subsequently extended it to October 31, 2026, allowing companies more time to complete the process.

The extension follows a government announcement on September 17 regarding an increase in the salary threshold for mandatory PF contributions. According to the information provided, the limit was raised from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000.

Since the change was introduced during the month, employers may need to account for different salary thresholds when calculating payroll and PF contributions. The additional time is intended to help companies make the necessary adjustments and submit their ECR filings.

What Happens If a Company Misses the October 31 Deadline?

Employers should complete their PF return filing and contribution payments within the prescribed time. Delays in depositing PF contributions may result in additional financial liabilities under the applicable provisions of the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

Under Section 7Q, interest may be charged at 12% per annum on delayed payments, as applicable. Section 14B provides for damages in cases covered by the relevant provisions and rules. Employers who fail to comply with statutory requirements may also face further legal consequences, depending on the circumstances.

Companies should therefore review their payroll calculations, verify employee contribution details and complete the September 2026 ECR filing by October 31, 2026.
