The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for employers to file the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and deposit statutory provident fund contributions for September 2026. Establishments will now have until October 31, 2026, to complete these requirements, instead of the earlier deadline of October 15.

According to an EPFO circular dated October 13, 2026, the extension follows requests from employers and other stakeholders who reported technical, operational and administrative challenges after the revision of the statutory PF wage ceiling. The additional time applies only to the September 2026 wage month and does not affect deadlines for other months.

Why Has EPFO Extended the PF Filing Deadline?

The extension comes after the statutory wage ceiling for mandatory PF coverage was increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, effective September 17, 2026.

Because the revision took effect in the middle of the month, employers needed to update their payroll systems, salary records and employee-wise provident fund contribution calculations. These changes created difficulties for some establishments attempting to complete their statutory filings within the original deadline.

The revised date gives employers more time to adjust their systems and submit accurate returns. However, the extension does not remove their responsibility to comply with applicable provident fund rules or waive other statutory requirements.

What Employees Should Check in Their PF Accounts

Although employers are responsible for filing ECRs and depositing PF contributions, employees can review their provident fund records to ensure that the relevant payments have been credited correctly.

Once the employer completes the filing and payment process, employees should check their PF passbook for September 2026 contributions. They should also review their salary and contribution details to confirm that the recorded amounts are consistent with the applicable rules and their eligible wages.

If the contributions do not appear in the account after the employer has completed the required formalities, employees can contact their company’s payroll department for clarification.

Employees do not need to submit a separate ECR themselves, as this is an employer-level compliance requirement.

What Employers Need to Know About the New Deadline

Employers must complete both the ECR filing and the deposit of statutory PF contributions for September 2026 by October 31, 2026, subject to the applicable provisions of the Code on Social Security, 2020, and the relevant schemes.

EPFO has also instructed its field offices to communicate the extended deadline to establishments under their jurisdiction and assist them in completing the compliance process.

Employers should note that the extension is limited to the September 2026 wage month. The existing deadlines for other wage months remain unchanged.
