Ayushman Card beneficiaries receive health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family every year under the Central Government’s Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The scheme helps eligible families access cashless treatment without having to bear the full cost of hospitalisation.

However, many beneficiaries want to know whether treatment under the scheme stops after the family has used its entire ₹5 lakh coverage during a financial year. The important point is that this amount is allotted to the whole family, not separately to each member.

Does Ayushman Card Treatment Stop After the ₹5 Lakh Limit?

Under the scheme, each eligible family receives annual health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh. If the entire amount is spent on the treatment of one person or several family members, the regular cashless treatment benefit becomes unavailable for the rest of that financial year.

However, the coverage does not end permanently. The ₹5 lakh limit is renewed at the beginning of the next financial year, allowing eligible families to use the benefit again.

Can You Get Financial Assistance After Exhausting the Limit?

In certain states, patients may be able to seek additional support if their Ayushman Card coverage has been fully used and they require urgent treatment or surgery.

For serious medical conditions such as cancer, organ transplants and cardiac care, special permission may be requested from the District Health Department or the State Health Agency (SHA).

The patient’s case may be examined at the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) level. Depending on the review and applicable provisions, further government assistance may be considered.

Beneficiaries may also explore financial support through the Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi or the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund of their respective state when the Ayushman coverage is exhausted.

Important Things Ayushman Card Holders Should Know

There are several points beneficiaries should keep in mind while using their health coverage:

  • Families can undergo hospital treatment multiple times in a year as long as some amount remains available within the ₹5 lakh limit.
  • Cashless treatment benefits are available only at government and private hospitals empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
  • Before beginning treatment, beneficiaries should ask the hospital’s Ayushman Helpdesk to check the remaining coverage available on their card.

Checking the available balance in advance can help families understand how much coverage remains for further treatment.
