The Central Government has approved changes to the disability pension scheme aimed at extending financial assistance to more people with disabilities. Under the revised rules, the minimum disability requirement has been reduced from 80% to 40%. The minimum age limit has also been removed, allowing eligible children to receive assistance from birth, subject to the prescribed conditions.
The government has also approved the continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme for another five years, until October 2026, along with revisions to the disability pension rules. The programme has been renamed the ‘PM Samajik Madad Scheme’.
What Has Changed in the Divyang Pension Scheme?
The revised rules introduce changes to the disability criteria, age eligibility and pension amounts.
Previously, applicants needed to have a disability level of at least 80% to qualify under the scheme. The threshold has now been lowered to 40%, potentially bringing more people within its coverage.
The earlier minimum age requirement of 18 years has also been removed. Eligible children can now receive assistance from birth, provided they meet the applicable conditions.
The monthly pension amount has also been revised. Eligible beneficiaries will receive ₹375 per month instead of the earlier ₹300. For individuals aged 80 years or above, the monthly pension has increased from ₹500 to ₹625.
Who Can Apply for the Divyang Pension?
The revised scheme aims to make pension assistance accessible to a wider group of people with disabilities. However, applicants must meet the prescribed eligibility requirements to receive the benefit.
Applicants need a valid disability certificate confirming a disability level of at least 40%. Their family must also satisfy the applicable poverty-related and other eligibility conditions.
Meeting the disability threshold alone does not guarantee approval. Applicants should check all the requirements applicable to their circumstances before submitting an application.

When Will the New Pension Rules Be Implemented?
According to the government, further guidelines covering eligibility, the number of beneficiaries and the amount of financial assistance will be issued and implemented within three months.
People planning to apply should contact their respective state Social Welfare Department for the latest information on eligibility, required documents and the application procedure. Checking the official guidelines before applying can help applicants understand whether they qualify under the revised scheme.
