OpenAI is rolling out a new Privacy Center in ChatGPT, giving users a single place to understand the platform’s privacy features and quickly find the settings that control them. The new hub brings information about Memory, personalized experiences and ads, Temporary Chat, connected apps, model improvement, account security, and data management together.
The Privacy Center does not replace ChatGPT’s existing privacy settings. Instead, it acts as a guide, explaining how different privacy controls work and directing users to the relevant setting when they want to make a change.
What the ChatGPT Privacy Center Includes
The Privacy Center organizes privacy-related information into three main categories: Personalized chats and ads, Chat privacy, and Data use and access. Each section provides details about specific features and, where available, a direct way to access the corresponding control.
The Personalized chats and ads section covers features such as Memory, personalized advertising and location controls where available. Users can learn how Memory is used to personalize responses and access the relevant Memory settings.
Deleting a conversation does not automatically remove a Memory that was saved from that conversation. Memory has to be managed separately through its own controls.
Temporary Chats and Chat Privacy
The Chat privacy section focuses on Temporary Chat and explains how these conversations differ from regular chats.
Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history while they remain temporary, do not create or update Memory, and are not used to improve OpenAI’s models. Users can also choose whether a Temporary Chat is personalized before starting the conversation. OpenAI may retain a copy of a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
The Privacy Center also provides an option to start a new Temporary Chat directly from the relevant section.
Data Use, Connected Apps and Security
The Data use and access section brings together information related to connected apps, model improvement, account security, and data export or deletion.
For eligible personal accounts, users can access the Improve the model for everyone setting to decide whether their content can be used to improve OpenAI’s models. Turning this setting off applies to future conversations, but it does not delete existing chats or remove them from chat history.
The same section also provides information about what connected apps can access and the permissions they may require. Account security options, including multi-factor authentication, are covered as well.
