Central Government employees and pensioners may receive their September 2026 salary and pension ahead of schedule, with payments permitted from September 25. The move comes before the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled from September 28 to 30.

The advance disbursement is intended to minimise possible delays in salary, pension and other payments during the strike period. The arrangement will cover Central Government employees and pensioners, including those associated with Defence, Posts and Telecommunications.

September Salary and Pension Payment on September 25

According to a communication issued by the Finance Ministry, the proposed bank strike could affect banking transactions between September 28 and September 30.

To avoid disruption, Central Government offices have been allowed to draw and release September salaries, wages and pensions on Friday, September 25.

The provision also applies to industrial employees of the Central Government. Pension payments for Central Government pensioners may likewise be released by the respective banks or Pay and Accounts Offices.

Advance Payment to Be Adjusted in October

The government has clarified that the September 25 disbursement will be considered an advance payment rather than an additional amount.

After the actual salary, wages or pension payable for September is calculated, any required adjustment will be made. The government has stated that the adjustment, where applicable, will be recovered from the October 2026 salary or pension payment.

This means the early payment will not increase the monthly entitlement of employees or pensioners.

Banks to Operate on Sunday, September 27

The government has also arranged for banking services to remain available immediately before the proposed strike.

Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will remain operational on Sunday, September 27, despite it being a weekly holiday. The decision comes ahead of the weekend holidays on September 26 and 27 and is intended to give customers an additional opportunity to complete important banking transactions.

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and Currency Chests on September 27.

Three-Day Bank Strike From September 28

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30. Among the demands raised by the unions is the introduction of a five-day banking week.

The proposed strike also falls during the banking sector’s half-year closing period, which could affect some transactions.

Against this backdrop, the government has asked banking institutions to make advance arrangements wherever possible to prevent unnecessary delays in payments and other transactions due towards the end of September.

The early release of government salaries and pensions and the decision to keep banks operational on September 27 are among the measures being taken to reduce the impact of the proposed strike.
