Bank customers may face disruptions in branch-based services as employee unions have called a nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026. The government has taken steps to reduce the impact of the three-day strike, including keeping public sector banks and regional rural banks operational on Sunday, September 27.

The strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), comes alongside the preceding weekend holidays, which could result in a prolonged disruption to physical banking services. Customers have therefore been advised to complete important branch-related work in advance.

SBI Waives ATM Charges During Strike

State Bank of India has announced a relief measure for its customers during the strike period. From September 28 to 30, SBI customers will not have to pay ATM transaction charges when using ATMs of any bank across the country, as per the bank’s announcement.

SBI has also advised customers to complete essential branch transactions before the strike begins. The bank has said that digital services such as YONO, internet banking, mobile banking, WhatsApp banking and its 24×7 contact centre will continue to remain available during the strike period.

Banks to Remain Open on September 27

To help customers complete urgent banking work before the proposed strike, the government has directed public sector banks and regional rural banks to function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The Reserve Bank of India has approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on that day.

Customers who need services that require a branch visit can therefore use September 27 to complete their pending work.

Employee Unions Object to Sunday Working

Employee organisations, including NOBW, NOBO, AIGBWO and AIGBOO, have raised objections to the decision to make September 27 a working day. Representatives met officials from the Department of Financial Services to discuss the issue.

According to reports, the employee representatives sought withdrawal of the order making Sunday a working day. As an alternative, they requested double pay and compensatory leave for employees who work on September 27.

The proposed strike is expected to primarily affect branch-based banking operations, while customers can continue using available digital and self-service channels for routine transactions.
