The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar lists a bank holiday in Jharkhand for September 22. Customers planning to visit a branch today should therefore check their local bank’s schedule before making a trip.
Why Are Banks Closed on September 22?
Banks in Jharkhand are closed today for Karma Puja, an important traditional festival in the state. As per the Jharkhand government’s 2026 holiday schedule, educational institutions will also remain closed on September 22 and 23 for the festival.
All major government and private-sector banks operating in Jharkhand, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, will remain closed in the state today.
Bank branches in other states will continue to operate according to their respective holiday schedules.
What Is Karma Puja?
Karma Puja is a traditional festival associated with nature, agriculture and local customs in Jharkhand. Around a week before the festival, women plant grain seeds in special baskets called Jawa. The sand used for planting is collected from nearby rivers or ponds, and the seeds are cared for and worshipped throughout the seven-day period.
On the main day of the festival, branches of the Karma tree are worshipped as part of the traditional ceremony.
The Karma deity is associated with happiness, prosperity, good health and protection for families. After the puja, people participate in traditional Karma dances, with celebrations continuing through the night to the sounds of drums and cymbals. The following morning, the Karma branches are respectfully immersed or returned to a nearby river or pond.
When Will Banks Be Closed Again in September?
Apart from the September 22 holiday in Jharkhand, banks will also remain closed on certain dates in other parts of the country during the month.
September 23: Banks in Jammu and Srinagar will remain closed on the occasion of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji’s birthday.
September 25: Bank branches in Gangtok will be closed for Indrajatra celebrations.
September 26: Banks across the country will remain closed because it falls on the fourth Saturday of the month.
Customers should check the applicable holiday schedule for their state before visiting a bank branch, as bank holidays can vary from one region to another.
