Apple Lease Program: Apple has officially confirmed that customers using its new device lease program in the United States will not lose access to their leased iPhones, iPads, or Macs if they miss a monthly payment. However, users who repeatedly fail to make payments could still face serious financial consequences under the program’s terms.

The clarification comes after reports suggested Apple was working on a feature that could remotely restrict access to leased devices when payments were overdue.

Apple Says Missed Payments Won’t Disable Devices

Earlier this week, Apple introduced its new Upgrade Program, allowing customers in the U.S. to lease products such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs through affordable monthly installments.

Under the program:

  • iPhones can be leased for up to 24 months.
  • Mac computers are available on lease plans lasting 36 months.

Following the launch, speculation emerged that Apple planned to lock leased devices if users failed to make their monthly payments.

However, according to a report by The Verge, Apple has denied those claims, stating that missing a payment or defaulting on the lease will not cause an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to become unusable.

Why Were Locking Rumours Circulating?

The speculation began after a 9to5Mac report highlighted references in the iOS 27 beta code to a feature reportedly called Restricted Mode.

The feature was believed to be linked to Apple’s App Managed Feature system and was thought to reduce or restrict device functionality if lease payments were overdue.

Apple has now clarified that the feature will not be used to block access to devices leased through its new financing program.

What Happens If You Miss Multiple Payments?

Although Apple won’t remotely disable your device after a missed payment, customers should still pay close attention to the lease agreement.

According to Klarna, the financing partner managing Apple’s lease program, missing three consecutive monthly payments can lead to the cancellation of the lease.

If that happens:

  • The lease agreement may be terminated.
  • The customer could be required to pay the remaining outstanding balance in full.

In other words, while the device will not be locked immediately, repeated payment defaults may result in the loss of the financing arrangement and a significant financial obligation.

Apple Launches Lease Program Ahead of New iPhone Release

The timing of Apple’s new leasing initiative has attracted attention, as it arrives just months before the expected launch of the iPhone 18 series.

Industry reports suggest Apple could increase prices for its upcoming smartphones, following recent price adjustments for certain Mac and iPad models. A leasing option may therefore appeal to customers looking to spread the cost of premium Apple devices over monthly payments.

What to Expect Next

Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPhone 18 lineup during its traditional September launch event. Rumors also indicate that the company could introduce its first foldable iPhone, alongside new Pro models and other hardware upgrades.

With the new lease program now available in the U.S., customers may have an alternative way to upgrade to Apple’s latest devices without paying the full purchase price upfront, provided they keep up with their monthly payments.
