Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) will become mandatory from October 1, 2026, for domestic LPG consumers who want to book refills at the regulated retail selling price with the applicable subsidy.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9% of the total, had completed the authentication process as of Saturday. Consumers who have already completed BAA will not need to take any further action.
How Consumers Can Complete Authentication
Those who are yet to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication can do so through multiple options. The process is available during LPG cylinder delivery, at the LPG distributor’s showroom or through the mobile applications of the three public sector oil marketing companies.
Indane customers can use the IndianOil ONE app, Bharatgas consumers can use HelloBPCL, while HP Gas customers can complete the process through the HP PAY app from home.
Consumers who complete the authentication will be able to book subsidised refills at the regulated retail selling price.
What Happens If Consumers Do Not Complete BAA?
The ministry said consumers who are unable or unwilling to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication can still receive LPG. However, they will need to register their choice through their OMC’s digital channels, including consumer portals, mobile applications, WhatsApp chatbots or IVRS.
Such consumers will receive LPG at the applicable market price without subsidy. The ministry said 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders will be available, subject to local availability.
Government’s Objective Behind the Authentication Drive
According to the government, biometric Aadhaar authentication is intended to ensure that subsidised LPG reaches genuine and eligible households. The process is also aimed at preventing the diversion of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial and industrial use and identifying duplicate or ineligible connections.
The government had initially fixed June 30 as the authentication deadline. The deadline was subsequently extended several times, with September 14 set as the final deadline.
LPG Subsidy Support and OMC Compensation
To help keep domestic LPG affordable, the government is providing ₹30,000 crore in compensation to oil marketing companies during FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27.
The government said accumulated under-recoveries of public sector OMCs on domestic LPG had crossed ₹62,000 crore as of August 31, 2026. Against this backdrop, the government has highlighted targeted subsidy delivery as important for maintaining the LPG support system.
