Bus passengers in Karnataka may soon have to pay higher fares as the state government considers increasing public transport ticket prices. The development comes shortly after the recent price revision of Nandini milk and yoghurt in the state.
State Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh said a meeting has been scheduled with officials from Karnataka’s four transport corporations at Double Road in Bengaluru. The meeting is planned for Tuesday evening, and the possibility of increasing bus fares across the state will be discussed.
An official announcement is expected after the meeting, once a final decision has been taken.
Why Is Karnataka Considering a Bus Fare Increase?
According to Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh, rising diesel prices have put considerable financial pressure on the state’s transport corporations. He said the four corporations have collectively suffered losses of around ₹9,000 crore.
The minister also pointed out that the transport corporations are facing annual losses of approximately ₹2,000 crore. These financial challenges have made it increasingly difficult to manage their regular operating expenses.
Decision on Bus Ticket Prices Expected After Meeting
The minister said officials will discuss whether a fare revision is necessary and, if so, how much the ticket prices should increase.
He explained that the meeting would focus on the financial position of the transport corporations before reaching a decision. Further details are expected to be shared the following day after the discussions are completed.
Suresh also attributed the financial pressure to repeated diesel price increases by the central government, stating that diesel prices had been raised five times over the previous nine months.
Salary and Fuel Expenses Add to Financial Pressure
The transport corporations must regularly arrange funds for employee salaries, diesel purchases and other operational requirements. The minister said managing these expenses has become increasingly difficult amid continuing financial losses.
With the corporations facing an estimated annual loss of ₹2,000 crore, the state government is examining whether higher bus fares could help address the situation.
A final decision on the proposed Karnataka bus fare hike is expected after the meeting with officials from all four transport corporations.
