Public transport in Gurugram is set for a major upgrade with the arrival of 55 new electric buses. The vehicles have been delivered to the Sector 10 bus depot as part of efforts to improve public transportation, passenger safety and environmental sustainability.

The new buses will become part of the Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL) fleet. Trial operations have already started for 40 buses on different routes, while registration and other necessary formalities for the remaining 15 vehicles are underway. Regular services will begin once the required administrative approvals are received.

New Electric Buses to Operate on More Than 25 Routes

GMCBL has identified more than 25 important routes across Gurugram for operating the newly added electric buses.

The planned routes include services connecting Gurugram with Delhi, Vallabhgarh and Manesar to Dwarka, along with other busy locations. The transport authority may modify these routes in the future depending on passenger demand and the number of commuters.

The additional buses are expected to improve connectivity and provide more travel options for daily passengers.

SOS Buttons and Advanced Safety Features for Passengers

The new electric buses come with several features designed to improve passenger security and convenience. An SOS emergency button has been provided at every seat. In an emergency, passengers can press the button to alert the GMCBL control room.

Special passenger-counting cameras have also been installed near the entry and exit points. These cameras will help monitor passenger movement, maintain accurate headcounts and improve transparency in the ticketing system.

For passengers with disabilities, the buses feature wheelchair lifts to make boarding and getting off easier.

Another safety feature prevents the bus from moving if any window remains open. The nine-metre-long vehicles also have greater ground clearance than older low-floor buses, helping them operate more comfortably on uneven and damaged roads.

Electric Bus Range and Charging Facilities at Depots

Each bus can travel up to 150 kilometres on a full charge. To support the growing electric bus fleet, GMCBL has developed charging facilities at the Sector 10 depot.

The depot has 18 charging points, allowing up to 36 buses to be charged simultaneously. Under normal charging mode, a bus takes approximately two hours to charge, while fast charging can complete the process in around one hour.

Apart from Sector 10, another electric bus depot has also been established in Sector 48 to support operations.

With the addition of these 55 vehicles, Gurugram is moving towards expanding its electric public transport network with improved passenger facilities and modern safety systems.
