The Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, has established the National Social Security Board for gig and platform workers. The initiative aims to support the development of welfare schemes and social protection measures for India’s growing gig economy workforce.
According to an Extraordinary Gazette notification issued by the Ministry, Manasvi Mann, General Counsel and Head of Corporate Affairs and Public Policy at Rapido, has been nominated as a member of the Board. Rapido is the only app-based passenger mobility aggregator among the five platform companies whose representatives have been selected by the government.
National Social Security Board to Address Gig Workers’ Welfare
The newly constituted Board brings together representatives from different sections of India’s gig and platform economy. Its membership includes digital platform companies, worker organisations, central and state government representatives, as well as subject-matter experts.
The aim is to create a common platform where industry experience, workers’ concerns and government policy perspectives can be considered while discussing social security measures.
The Board will contribute to developing and implementing initiatives that improve gig and platform workers’ access to welfare benefits, financial protection and long-term social security.
Rapido to Represent App-Based Passenger Mobility Sector
Manasvi Mann’s nomination gives Rapido an opportunity to present the experience and requirements of the app-based passenger mobility industry during national-level discussions.
The sector covers services such as bike taxis, auto-rickshaws and cabs, which provide livelihood opportunities to a large number of people. These services also have specific welfare and social protection requirements that need consideration while framing policies for platform workers.
Through its representative, Rapido will participate in discussions alongside government officials, industry representatives, worker organisations and other stakeholders to help shape the social security framework.
Focus on Inclusive Social Security for Platform Workers
The formation of the Board comes at a time when platform-based employment is becoming an increasingly important source of livelihood across India. As the sector continues to grow, ensuring access to welfare benefits and financial security remains an important policy priority.
The Board is expected to provide a platform for government authorities, companies and worker representatives to discuss these requirements and work towards suitable solutions.
Its establishment highlights the need to ensure that the expansion of India’s gig economy is supported by inclusive welfare policies. Stronger social protection measures can play an important role in improving workers’ long-term security while supporting the sustainable growth of the platform economy.
